Religious Officials Report of Suburban Church Concentration

"church boom" is heavily con
centrated in suburbs and small
towns, religious leaders said
today.
They reported that while over
all U. S. church enrollment has
been soaring to an all-time high
of more than 100 million, church
es in rural areas and in the
downtown sections of big cities
the two extremes of popula
tion density have been losing
members steadily.
The uneven impact of the
back-to-church movement is now
under close study by officials of
major denominations. Here are
some of the facts they have es
tablished. Most of the thousands of new
churches built since World War
II have gone up in suburban
areas. Even so, the typical sub
urban church has an overflow
ing congregation and is casting
about for more space.
During the same period, rural
churches have been closing at a
rate ' of nearly 1,000 a year.
Many of those still open are
struggling for survival with
sharply reduced membership and
budgets.
Protestant churches, particu
larly, are disappearing from the
"inner city' at what the Nation
al Council of Churches calls an
alarming rate." For example, on
ly two major Protestant church
es survive in downtown St.
Louis, three in Cleveland's inner
city.
Part of the answer but only
part is the great shift in popu
lation that has occurred since
the war. The suburbs have swol
len enormously, while rural and
downtown areas have lost pop
ulation. A related factor in the plight
of downtown churches is the in
flux of many Negro residents
into neighborhoods formerly oc
cupied almost entirely by whites.
Churches located in these
"changing neighborhoods" are
confronted with a choice be
tween racial integration or go
ing to the suburbs with their
white parishioners.
Some pioneering churches
have chosen to stand fast and
tackle the problems by achiev
ing "color blind" Christian fel
lowship. But many more have
taken the easier course of sell
ing their valuable downtown
land and using the money to
relocate in the suburbs.
Diagnosing the trouble of
rural churches is more compli
cated. Dr. James M. Carr of th
Presbyterian church, says they
are folding because "they aren't
doing the job they're supposed
to do" and are "failing to meet
the needs of the people.
