a few thousand miles away.
I met Elisa while in my last
O few weeks of service overseas.
Of course we couldn't get to
know one another very well, but
we certainly hit it off great in
that short time. Since then we
have corresponded regularly.
Both of us write at least two
letters a wajel and I feel we
reany Know each other by now

er girls since I've gotten home.
I just don t want to.

very nice letter to my mother,

feel sure Elisa is the only girl

Hilt, N.J-Roger is much too
young to marry anyone let
alone a girl he only knows
tatough correspondence. He has
shown me sonTe of the girl's let
ters and I'll admit that she
sounds very nice, but a girl can
write nice latter and still be
very different in person.
I have the impression from
the letter written by the girl's
mother that she is all too anxious
to marry of her daughter to my
son. Conditions are probably not
so good where they are and she
feels her daughter will be better
off in Argerica.
These foreign girls seem glam
ourous to young boys just be
cause they are so different, but
I think Roger would be better
off with an American girl from
his own background.
The Council Rdger's mother
appears to be on fairly sound
ground in her reasoning, but
she would make more headway
with him if she were less in
sistent on her own point of view.
O There is. after all, a possibil
ity that Elisa and Roger are
particularly vell suited to each
other and could be happy to
gether. She could. answer the
letter from Elisa's mother in a

friendly spirit without commit
ting her son to anything. The
girl's mother may simply like
Roger and feel the match would
be a good one, without having
special designs about getting her
daughter to America.
Roger should recognize, how
ever, that his mother has some
good points. There is a special
glamour about girls met over
seas. The girl has the charm
of being different in speech,
manner and often dress. The
young man feels different and
venturesome himself, since he is
far from home and family. When
he gets to really know the girl
in a familiar setting, her "dif
ferent" ways become less im
portant. She is a human being
and he may or may not like the
human being underneath.
Roger should also recognize
that he is rather young to judge
a person on the basis of a few
meetings and correspondence. It
takes an older, more experienced
man to be able to size up a girl
In this way. He is now cutting
himself off from gaining more
experience and a basis for com
parison by not going out with
other girls.
Roger should start dating
American girls again. He can
continue 4 his correspondence
with Elisa. If, after some length
of time, he still feels the same,
heishould investigate the possi
bilities of Elisa's coming to visit
America so that they can get
to know one another still better
before committing themselves.
Elisa, too, will then have a
chance to see how she feels about
living so far from her native
country.

Sales of series E and H bonds
in Jackson county showed an in
crease from $133,643 in January,
1956, to $147,796 in January this
year, according to George W.
Mimnaugh, state director, U.S.
savings bonds division.
Total sales in the state last
month were $4,338,161 more
than sales in January, 1956.
Production of hams in the
United States each year is said
to exceed one and one-half bil
lion pounds.
Holmes' Taxation
Message Due Soon
Salem (U.R) Gov. Robert D.
Holmes said Wednesday he
should have a message ready for
the Legislature on Oregon taxa
tion problems within "two or
three weeks."
The governor told a press con
ference "we have to know more
definitely how much money
we're going to need before a
tax program can be spelled out."
The big imponderable in his
budget, the governor said, was
what the legislature would do
about the proposed S38 million
basic school support increase.
"We have to be closer to de
termining this issue before de
ciding on a tax program," Gov.
Holmes said.
The governor said he was
"hopeful" he would have an
other speech outlining his re
sou r c e development program
ready for the Legislature by
next Monday or Tuesday. He
flies to a meeting of the Na
tional Democratic committee in
San Francisco Friday morning
and returns to Salem Sunday
afternoon.
