With Globetrotters
One of the most popular mem
berg of basketball's most cele
brated team, Sam Wheeler, will
lend his gifted touch to the Har
lem Globetrotters when they
play the Honolulu Surf Riders
at Crater High school gym at
Central Point on Friday night,
March 1.
Cage fans have taken Wheeler
to 0heir hearts ever since he
first started his activities witn
the Trotters 12 seasons ago, and
he grows with popularity each
passing year. Globetrotter Own
er Abe Saperstein says Wheeler
has that certain something that
makes him an outstanding Globe
trotter. He is a &ne all-around
player and a real entertainer.
He's one & the top comedians in
the Globetrotter organization
and is rated one of the funniest
men in sports.
Attended Arkansas College
Wheeler, a six foot, one inch
athlete, came to the Globe trot
ters after a spectagulaj sports
career at Philander Snith col
legHin Arkansas. He was out
standing in basketball and taase
ball and followed bo ft of these
sports in pro ranks upon his
graduation. A short time later
his ath crossed that of Saper
steirr' and Wheeler has played
baseball and basketball with the
Globetrotters ever since.
On the court Wheeler Is ex
ceptionally fast and clever, an
excellent Jbasket shooter and
strong defensively. He's an avid
camera fan and has an enviable
05! lection of pictures taken on
hjs world-wide travels with the
Trotters.

lection on his team's recent tour
of the Far East, from which the
unit comes to Central Point.
A six-act variety show featur
ing some of the nation's top
night club talent will accompany
the Globetrotters. Kalf of the
show, to last an hour and 10
minutes, will be presented before
the game and the other half will
be seen at halftime.

foot pole vault will be the next
major track and field "barrier"
to be broken, says Bob Gutow
ski. of. Occidental college, a
young man who believes he can
do it.
Gutowski, a wiry, 21-year-old
145-pounder, made the best
vault of his life and narrowly
missed setting a world record
when he skyrocketed 15 feet,
six inches to tie Rev. Bob Rich
ards of Los Angeles for the Mill-
rose title Saturday night.
"The way we're vaulting now
we'll reach 16 feet definitely
within the next two years,"
Gutowski said. "I hope to be the
one to do it and I think maybe
I can."
Charlie Franklin, University
of. Oregon's tricky junior for
ward, has taken a real liking to
his role as a part-time post man.
In the last five games Franklin
has scored 119 points, topped by
his 36 against Washington State
at Pullman.

by 44 birds, 974 to 930 Sunday

Medford Gun club.
The Blues will serve as hosts
for the annual dinner and meet
ing of the club this Wednesday.
The 7 p.m. dinner will follow
a 6:30 p.m. social hour.
Members will elect three dir
ectors. Terms of Henry Kieder
meyer, Ed Pease and Ed Weber
expire. Directors will convene
after the membership session to
elect officer.
Forty-four paid up members
took part in the team shoot. Sam
Samson broke 50 straight birds
for the Blues in their losing
cause.
Over 50 shooters, including
non-members fired at the clays
during the day, using 5,150
targets.
William Jantzer won the Ed
Pease handicap over a field of
20, busting 49 of 50. Martin
Clogston and Bob Elden crack
ed 47 each.

Brown Favored
To Retain Title
New York (U.R) Joey Brown
is favored at 13-5 to keep his
lightweight crown Wednesday
night in a return title bout with
Wallace (Bud) Smith at the
Miami Beach auditorium.
It will be Brown's first de
fense of the 135-pound cham
pionship since he won it in
hometown New Orleans from
Smith of Cincinnati last Aug.
24. Neither fought since then.
Although it was a split de
cision by which Brown gained
the title, he is a heavy favorite
this time because he fractured
his right wrist in the second
round at New Orleans and won
nevertheless from a faded Smith.
Webb To Fight
Their 15-round bout will be
televised and broadcast nation
ally by ABC.
Spider Webb of Chicago,
fourth ranking middleweight
cantender, meets rugged Neal
Rivers of Las Vegas, Nev., in a
10-rounder at Madison Square
Garden Friday night. Because of
his 17 straight victories, Webb
is favored at 3-1. Rivers is
ranked eighth. NBC will tele
vise and broadcast it nationally.
