North Dakota Soil
Not Necessarily
BestforPlants
Fargo, N.D. U.Pj The rich
heavy North Dakota soil that
raises bumper field crops isn't
necessarily the best potting ma
terial for house plants.
Expenental potted plants
that were just managing to
struggle along in heavy Fargo
clay soil at the North Dakota
State College greenhouses took
a new lease on life when potted
in sphagnum moss, reported hor
ticulturist Don Hoag.
Sphagnum moss is that dry,
springy material you often find
packed around the roots of nur
sery stock prepared for trans
planting, he said. Properly ferti
lized, the moss has proved to be
an excellent growing medium
for Qnearly all popular house
plants.
O If you have an ailing, soil-
potted plant, and household con
ditions such as a gas stove or
furnace can't be blamed for its
lack of vigor, try potting it in
sphagnum moss, advised Hoag.
Retains Moisture
Remove the plant from its
,-pot. and wash all clinging soil
particles from its root. Repot the
plant by taking bits of moss,
soaked in water and squeezed
dry, and packing them around
the plant. Pack the moss until it
is firm, but not hard.
Since moss alone has little or
no fertilizer value, the horticul
turist said that monthly appli
cations of a fertilizer solution
one-half the strength normally
used in soil-potted plants is ad
visable. Any good quality com
lete fertilizer will be satisfac
tory. Sphagnum moss retains mois
ture for over a month under
average spring, summer and fall
conditions. This means you can
enjoy vacations without making
special arrangements with the
neighbors to water the plants
In the winter, plants should be
watered about once a week, de
pending on the amount of hu
midity In your house.

Among the recent aids for the
relief of persons whose matri
monial mates' snoring keep
awake is something called a
"snore mask." This keeps the
snorer's jaws shut. That strikes
me as rather a rough remedy. I
also question its safety and be
lieve it might be injurious to the
health. I suggest that before tak
ing any such radical step as af
fixing a snore mask to a hus
band or wife's face, that the
book titled "How To Stop Snor
ing" by David Horwich be care
fully studied.
Horses and Women
The combined opinions of
health, beauty and fashion ex
perts indicate the ideal figure
for women in the 18 to 25 age
group is height, 5 feet, 5; weight
116; bust, 34Vi, waist 25 1-2 and
hips, 35'3. If your wife has
these measurements, she might
have a chance to win a Mrs. Am
erica title. Her chances would
be better if she clipped an inch
and a half off her waist. The
Mrs. America title is usually
won by women with a waist
measurement of 24 or less.
Asking
Queries from clients. Q. Was

Common Cold
Garlic is said to be a very ef
fective common cold preventive.
It is claimed if you take it reg
ularly you will never have a
cold. The way to take garlic
as a cold preventive is to chop
it up fine, make it into bread
pills and take one pill with
water daily two hours before
breakfast. When garlic is taken
this way it has no effect on the
breath.
Uranium Mining
May Be Cancer Cause
Chicago 1U.P.) Uranium min
ing is being investigated as a
possible cause of cancer.
Evidence is not conclusive
that uranium mining is harmful
to the miners, but experience in
Europe makes it suspect.
To safeguard American min
ers, a medical study into the
after-effects of uranium mining,
described to the - 44th National
Safety Congress, is being con
ducted. Duncan A. Holaday, director
of Public Health Service at Salt
Lake City, said approximately
1,300 men with known experi
ence in underground mining
were examined in the summer
of 1954, and their health status
and occupational histories re
corded. The Medical studies will be
repeated every three years. Dur
ing the intervening years, a cen
sus will be taken to see how
many of the group are still em
ployed in the mines and to keep
in touch with those who have
left the industry.
The ultimate hope is to accu
mulate data which will give esti
mates of the levels of radio
active dust and gas which are
actually present in the mines
during periods of operation, said
Holaday. The file will cover
some 500 mines listed as having
shipped ore during the first
three months of 1956.
Such information was missing
in the European case history, he
pointed out, leaving conclusions
about the toxic effects on hu
mans inconclusive.

rejects the notion that a house
should be an ornamental box
which necessarily limits the ac

Following are some features
of the X-100:
Skydomes and other great ex

Gardens are enclosed inside
the building to further incorp

An exposed steel frame bears
most of the structure's weight
and makes possible the use of
glass and plastic walls.

Education by Mail
Seen as Effective
Madison, Wis. flJ.R) An
experiment at the University of
Wisconsin indicates that educa
tion by mail may be as effective
as classroom study.
The experiment used an Intro
ductory psychology course for
its comparisons. Students taking
the course in university exten
sion classrooms used the same
text and were given the same
exam as their counterparts using
the mails.
The test results put the "mail
bag" students on a par with
their competition who could lis
ten to lecturers and question the
professor face-to-face.
The correspondent student
made up for this disadvantage
by getting the normal written
critiques on assignments. This
might mean more individual at
tention than the campus student
normally gels, the university
said.
Profs. Dale Dysinger and
Charles Bridgman noted some
limitations to their experiment.
They said that while students
on campus and at the other end
of the mails got the same exams
and texts, they could not be
equated as to scholastic ability
