Big Legs
Many women keep begging me
for help in regard to their big
legs. Usually, they have what is
called a
lymphed e m a,
which is prob
ably a congeni
tal or inborn
abnormality in
the little chan
nels or vessels
in the tissues
under the skin
c h a n n e 1 s
which carry
the lymph, a watery substance
which bathes the cells. This dis
ease has nothing to do with vari
cose veins, and removal of such
veins is not likely to help. I just
had a letter from a woman with
one big leg who says her surgeon
twice opened her abdomen hop
ing, I imagine, to find some ob
struction around the big veins,
but he did not find any.
Unfortunately, there is no
medicine that I know of that can
be taken by mouth to affect the
condition in the slightest. There
are at least two operations de
vised for the surgical removal of
the thick layer of tissue under
the skin, but they are big opera
tions, and surgeons to whom I
have talked are not keen about
attempting them.
One helpful thing a woman
can do if she has big legs, is not
to get fat. That makes matters
much worse. It is possible that
in some cases the wearing of an
elastic bandage could help.
Old-Fashioned Orphan Asylum
A while ago I spoke of the
passing of the old orphan asylum
with the children all in uniform,
and all largely deprived of any
individuality or of the love and
personal attention that they so
craved. i
Later a man of 70 wrote to tell
me that when he was seven, he
was put into such an asylum, and
for the next seven years was
painfully hungry because there
was so little food available. At
Easter time, when the children
were given a hard-boiled egg, my
correspondent says that many of
them just handled it and stroked
it, looking forward to eating it.
Finally, they began to nibble at
it, and some made it last for
three days! This was the only egg
they had in a yearj
The children were often beat
en, sometimes severely. Thank
goodness, in most places today
the demand for children to be
adopted is greater than the sup
ply, and the only children likely
to be left in a home are those

I understand that in some states
they are finding that there are
people with hearts and sympa
thies big and warm enough so
that they are willing and happy
to take into their homes some of
these poor little crippled and
handicapped children, and are
finding joy in giving them love
and care.
It makes me proud of my fel
low men and women when I read
such things! In most places an
effort is made to give the child
the sort of home from which his-
parents came. Then both the
child and the foster parents are
likely to be happy together. I
might here warn people again
not to buy "boot-leg babies."
Many a person who does this gets
himself into a mess. Later, he
can be blackmailed, or the
child's mother can come and de
mand that her child be returned
to her.
There is just one good way in
which to get a baby for adoption,
and that is legally, through a
fine agency.. The people that run
the agency know all about the
child's parents but will never di
vulge the information. They will
investigate the people who come
asking for a baby, to make sure
that they are likely to give him
(or her) a comfortable and loving
home and a good education.
