impact of ridicule upon a child
who may be taunted by his
playmates or the psychological
stress borne byQ teenager who
is miserably self-conscious about
appearance.
In addition to emotional and
social factors, teeth in improper
alignment dentists call it mal
occlusion present' other prob
lems. O Facial Deformities
Malocclusion may cause facial
deformities. It may contribute to
speech defects. It may iiterfere
with proper eating habits, caus
ing malnutrition. The teeth may
be especially susceptible to den
tal decayQbecause their position
makes it difficult to clean them
proper. And malocclusion may
lead to diseases of the gums later
in life.
Dentists agree generally on
the major caoscs of irregular
teeth.
There fc&vrience that heredity
may play a part. Another cause
is persistent thunjbsucking be
yond the ag; of abotit five, aiid
other hafaits that put abnormal
pressure, on the teeth and jaws.
Premature Loss
Still another cause is prema
ture loss of first teeth or too
long retention of first teeth.
Studies indicate that about
one-fifth of U.S. children have
serious malocclusion. The con
dition develops most commonly
during tjve time when a child is
losing his Writ teeth and when
his sacondrfeeth are appearing.

The development of badly po
sitioned teeth may often be pre
vented by periodic dental care.
For example, if a first tooth is
lost too soon, the dentist can in
sert a space maintainer, if neces
sary, so there will be space for
the permanent tooth to come in
at the right place.
If special corrective treatment
is needed, the dentist may refer
the patient to an orthodontist.
Means at Hand
To sum up, the means are at
hand to cut down drastically on
the enormous rate at which den
tal disorders are developing. The
most practical approach to the
problem is through the child.
The youngster who starts out
with proper dental habits has an
excellent chance to reach adult
hoofi with sound teeth.
Ideally, the toothbrush should
be used after every meal and
snack.
Consumption of sweets should
be reduced, especially between
meals. j
Fluoride Content
The fluoride content of the
public drinking water should be i
adjusted or, in rural areas, a !
fluoride solution applied to the j
teeth of children. !
There should be periodic vis- j
its to the dentist, beginning when
the child is about three.
With proper safeguards, there
is praotically no reason why
teeth should not last a lifetime
as they were intended to do.

launched by the United States

physical Year, Bendix Aviation
Corp. announced today.
The company said the radio,
as "Minitrack," was designed
and built by theoNaval Research
Laboratory. A string of 12 in
stallations along theAmerican
cWitinents will pick up the sig
nals from the satellite and per
mit Its course and orbit to be
plotted.
The Bend announcement
said the satellites transmitter
will put out signal 1-1,000,-000th
as strong as that of a
standard radio station, os about
as stron&s ihe power of a 100
watt light bulb. Prom a distance
of some 200 to 1,500 miles above
the Earth. Picking this up should

Wonder Girl Said To
Be in Good Condition

Insurance Policies
May Be Reinstated,
VA Officer Says
Many veterans who held Na
tional Service Life Insurance
policies have expressed con
fusion by recent changes in in
surance laws, S. T. Brannock,
officer in charge, VA office, 33
North Riverside ave., said today.
Veterans who let their terra
policies lapse are losing the
benefit because they believe
policies cannot be reinstated.
This is not the case, for lapsed
GI term insurance policies may
be reinstated any time before
the end of the term period, Bran
nock said.
The VA has found that many
veterans also believe that, be
cause they have let several
premiums go by on their five
year level term policies, they
have lost the benefit.
May Be Reinstated
Brannock explained that if the
five-year term has not expired,
that the .insurance may be rein
stated upon application and the
payment of two monthly prem
iums. A medical examination is re
quired if the policies have been
lapsed for more than three
months, but none is required if
the policies have been lapsed
less than three months, and the
insured signs a statement declar
ing he is in as good health as he
was on the date of lapse, Bran
nock said.
Any VA office will assist vet
erans in reinstating GI term in
surance, Brannock said.
