U. S. officials sought to stall or
prevent any Middle East war-i

United States was advised of
ficially by Israel, Britain or
France of their impending ac
tion. The White House and State
Department have said the first
news of the main events were
received via news agency re
ports. But these events did not
come as a complete surprise de
spite the refusal of the three
Allies to say anything about
them in advance to the United
States.
The United Press is informed
that a top secret report prepared
by intelligence agencies was de
livered to the White House
about 24 hours prior to the
Israeli attack of Oct. 29. This
report, dated Oct. 28, is said to
have made these three main
points:
Information Acted Upon
1. Israel will not attack Jor
dan. Earlier intelligence esti
mates indicated that Israel
would strike against Jordan.
2. Israel Instead will attack
Egypt-
3. France and Britain will at
tack in the Suez Canal area.
' This intelligence information
was "acted upon" by the govern
ment's intelligence advisory
committee which includes the
State Department, Joint Chiefs
of Staff, Army, Navy, Air Force.
Central Intelligence Agency,
Atomic Energy Commission, and
Federal Bureau of Investigation.
This means all these agencies
knew about the Allied plans as
did the White House.
Fire Destroys Small
Rogue River Building
Rogue River Fire late yester
day afternoon destroyed a lubri
cation building at the Shell serv
ice station on Highway 99 here,
according to state police.
The building was of wood
construction with a concrete
floor. The station is operated by
Edward H. Lilly, 43, of Rogue
River. The main station was
damaged slightly, police said.
The fire started when a cus
tomer, E. F. Martin of Rogue
River, attempted to obtain white
gasoline from a barrel in the
building, police said. Lilly was
busy at the time, and instructed
Martin to serve himself, they
added.
When Martin started pumping
the gasoline, flames came out
the hose, according to police.
Martin went to the main station
for help but the fire had pro
gressed too far to save the build
ing when he returned.

State Department
Still Wants Visit by
Tito Despite Protest
Washington (U.R) The State
Department still wants Yugo
slavia's Marshal Tito to visit
the United States despite pro
tests from Congress and hints
that Tito himself may be grow
ing cool to the idea.
Diplomatic officials passed
this word today, although the
State Department still main
tained an official silence on ef
forts to arrange the visit.
Tito, if he eventually does
come to the United States, would
be the first head of a Commu
nist nation to do so. Reports
that he might pay an official
call on President Eisenhower
have stirred outcries from Con
gress, Catholic groups and oth
ers. Mr. Eisenhower showed con
cern at his news conference
Wednesday over the growing
objections to visits by foreign
leaders who are not exactly
close friends of the United States
or who are unpopular with cer
tain segments of the population.
The President emphasized
that, in the interests of peace,
"you have got to meet face to
face the people with whom you
disagree at times to determine
whether or not there is a 'way
of working out differences and
reaching a better understand
ing." He said the mere meeting with
such a man "does not neces
sarily imply any approval" of
his policies. And the President
deplored "any discourtesy" the
U.S. people might show to sucn
foreign visitors.
This was a reference to the
snub New York City and state
officials gave to visiting King
Saud of Saudi Arabia when he
reached this country Monday.
