Neuberger Points
To Apparent Dodge
Of Responsibilty
Washington UPJ Sen. Rich
ard L. Neuberger (D-Ore.) said
Tuesday a "complete adminis
trative breakdown evidently has
occurred'' in the office of Ervln
L. Peterson, assistant secretary
of agriculture.
Neuberger said Peterson has
"stalled" for more than 12
months on two decisions "cru
cial" to Oregon.
He enlisted them as a lumber
industry request that the Three
Sisters wilderness area be re
duced in size and a proposal that
75 million board feet of "scrub"
timber near Crescent lake be
sold through competitive bid
ding. Peterson was not immediately
available for comment.
Pending Since 1955
Neuberger said the Three Sis
ters case had been pending since
February, 1955, and the Cres
cent Lake case since December,
1955.
"In reply to my repeated in
quiries during the "past year, I
have received only cliches about
"careful analysis of all factors."
"leaving no stone unturned,"
and "careful consideration and
study," Neuberger said.
The senator said that if Peter
son were "unwilling to decide
the issues, the Agricultural De
partment should appoint a re
placement who who is not afraid
to exercise responsibility."

MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THREE
On The Side
By E. V. Dueling
(Distributed by Kino. Futures Syndicate, Inc.)
In a recent discussion of cele
brities named Fanny, I omitted
the name of the great Fanny
Brice. An unforgivable omission.
All the more so because Fanny
was a good friend of mine. This
slip has cost me many a stogie.
Serves me right. I also failed to
mention Fanny Crosby, the bril
liant and highly prolific hymn
writer. Fanny wrote over 6,000
hymns, the best of which was
probably the one titled "Safe in
the Arms of Jesus."
Births
Have you had a new arrival
at your house recently? Up to
how near the birth did your wife
keep up her normal activities?
Discussing that situation, Moira
Shearer, the beautiful red-haired
ballet dancer, said, "With my
first child I went on dancing up
to six months. With the second 1
led a completely normal life up
to three weeks before. You see,
I always feel wonderful when I
am having a baby."
Asking
Queries from clients. Q. My
husoand claims the song "Over
The Rainbow" was popular long
before the film "The Wizard of
Oz" was released. I say Judy
Garland introduced it in the
film. How about this? Do I win
the nylons? A. You win. "Over
The Rainbow" was written es
pecially for the film "The Wizard
of Oz" by Harold Arlen and E.
Y. Harburg . . . Q. Did Arnold
Rothstein, the notorious gambler,
win a million dollars on one
horse race? A. Not quite a mil
lion, sir. On July 4, 1921, Roth
stein won about 5800,000 on a
horse named Sideral. That was
in the days of track bookmakers.
Sideral opened at 30 to 1. Closed
at 3 to 1.

Somerset Maugham is said to be

the French Riviera. Here is the
Maugham martini recipe: "Four

Rub ice around rim of glass."
Potatoes
Is the Idaho potato superior
to the Maine potato? Or vice
versa? That's an argument in
which I am requested to par
ticipate. I can't separate the
contestants. It's a dead heat in
my opinion. Anyway, at hand is
a hightly informative volume
titled "State of Maine Potato
Cook Book." The recipe for hash
ed brown potatoes in this book
intrigues me. I am an enthusi
astic hashed brown potato fan.
This particular recipe is one
used in the Grand Trunk Rail
way's dining cars.
Earning Power
How are you doing as com
pared to five years ago? Ac
cording to a statistician, it took
the average working man in 1951
some 41 minutes to earn the
price of a steak. Now, says he.
it takes only 28 minutes for
the average worker to earn the
price of a steak. Also, that five
years ago it took the average
man 44 minutes to earn the price
of a haircut. Now it takes only
42 minutes.
