Conanf Resignation
As Ambassador Told
Washington (U.R) The
White House has announced
the resignation of James B. Con
ant as U. S. ambassador to Ger
many, effective about Feb. 15.
President Eisenhower ex
pressed "deepest personal re
gret" in accepting the resigna
tion of the envoy, a former pres
ident of Harvard university.
Conant informed the Presi
dent Dec. 1 that he wanted to
leave his post to return to pri
vate life for personal reasons.
Conant served as high com
missioner and later as ambassa
dor to West Germany for about
five years.
Mr. Eisenhower in his letter
of acceptance said Conant serv
ed with "great distinction and
honor."
The White House gave no clue
as to when a successor would
be named.
