The Growth Hormone
Manv parents have written
me asking what they can do to
make a bov grow when it looks
as if he is
going to stay
very short. As
I said a while
ago, a com
mercial prepa
ration of the
growth hor
mone, which
was isolated a
good many
years ago by
Alvarez
Professor Herbert Evan's from
the pituitaries of animals, will
make a small dachshund grow
into a huge hound. But recently,
as I chatted about this with my
old friend, Dr. Evans, he told me
that, because of chemical differ
ences in the growth hormones
obtained from cattle, dogs, and
men, a commercial product,
made from animals, has not
worked entirely satisfactorily
with children. The results ob
tained have been erratic.
Now, Dr. C. H. Li, Director of
the University of California
Hormone Research Laboratory,
reports that the growth hor
mone made from monkeys ap
pears to be fairly similar to that
of man. Both are very different
from the growth hormone ob
tained from cattle. Dr- Li said
that the monkey hormone is now
being tested on boys to see if it
will make them grow. Unfor
tunately, if the monkey hor
mone proves to be effective for
children, it will be very hard to
get enough of it for commercial
use.
An important point is that,
after the age of 16 or so, growtn
in the long bones is finished, and
hence one can then no longer
hope to get good results from the
use of any drug.
A Hospital Helps People at Home
Montefiore Hospital in New
York City has just admitted to
its home-care service, patient
Number 1,000. He is a 63-year-old
man with a cancer of the
stomach which has grown into
his liver. He has been anemic
and almost confined to his bed
To care for such a man in a hos
pital would cost from $15 to $0
a day. Also, the man would tie
up a bed, much needed for per
sons with acute troubles- Ac
cordingly, patient No. 1,000 is
being given nursing service in
his home, and his wife is being
taught how to take care of him.
Once or twice a week a doctor
will go out from the hospital to
visit the man. The doctor can go
oftener if he is needed. The cost
of such service runs between 3
and 4 dollars a day.
Observers are now coming
from many countries to observe
the Montefiore experiment
which has worked so well. Al
ready one hospital in Texas has
a home-care service for women

According to Dr. Rossman, a
hospital should be devoted pri
marily to surgery, and to ill
nesses that require intensive
medical supervision, difficult
diagnostic work-ups and other
such services- The home-care pro
gram is for patients who require
some nursing care, with only an
occasional visit from a physician.
This is particularly the case with
patients who have cancer that
has scattered throughout the
body. Usually the patient is
much happier if left at home,
surrounded by his loved ones.
An occasional visit from the
nurse and the physician or a
physiotherapist or some special
therapist is often all that is
needed.
