    Modern Design
New Trend in
Church Buildings
By LOUIS CASSELS
Washington (U.R) After a
record $775 million wai spent
during 1958 for new and enlarg
ed churches, synagogues, Sunday
school buildings, and other re
ligious edifices, government ex
perts predict 1957 will bring
the biggest church building
boom in history.
The church building boom is
the concrete-and-steel expression
of an equally phenomenal in
crease in church membership.
The latest figures compiled by
the Yearbook of American
Churches mostly for the calen
dar year 1955 showed church
membership at an all-time high
of more than 100 million, an
increase of more than 50 per
cent since 1940.
Sunday school enrollment also
has been climbing rapidly, from
30 million in 1950 to 39 million
in 1955. The tidal wave of chil
dren, particularly in suburban
congregations, has been a main
source of the pressure on church
es to expand their physical fa
cilities. A large majority of the new
' churches to be built in 1957 will
go up in suburban areas. The
upsurge in church membership
has been predominantly concen
trated in the surburbs, while
many downtown and rural
churches nave been struggling
for existence.
Another characteristic which
many of the new crop of church
es will have in common is mod
ern design. Unitl a few years
ago, the bald, bold lines of con
temparary architecture were
rarely seen in houses of worship.
Traditional styles mainly goth
le, colonial and Georgian were
widely regarded as the only
"appropriate" architecture for
churches.
Now the trend is running
strongly toward modern design
both because of the construction
economics which it usually of
fers, and also because of a grow
ing conviction that churches
should speak in the language
of their age, architecturally as
well as otherwise.
