Japanese Changing
Attitude Toward U.S.
Citizens in Homeland
Tokyo 'U P; What if all the
Yanks in Japan obeyed the con
itant cry "Yankee, go home!"?
Aside from the political sig
nificance, it would mean a loss
of almost half a billion dollars
a year to the Japanese enough
to wipe out more than half this
island's trade deficit.
The Japanese are beginning
to realize this, and many are
changing the cry to, 'IIey, Yank,
please stay."
Figures released by American
officials show Japan still is de
pendent on U. S. military dol
lar. Most of the $470 million spent
t year went for official pur
chases from Japanese firms. But
$123 million was spent by indi
vidual soldiers, sailors, marines
and airmen, buying tatami mats
for their offbase apartments or
shipping souvenir kimonos back
home. Mess halls, officers' clubs
and similar activities spent an-
: other $87 million,
i Japan realized $2 3 billion
from its exports during 1956.
American sources say it was sig
i nificant that U. S. military
j spending equalled 20 per cent
i of those earnings.
American dollars, coupled
j with U. S. economic aid, enabled
j Japan to end the year with a
' $293 million balance in the for
feign exchange treasury despite
the fact imports exceeded ex
ports. "It is our hope that Japan can

The United States cut back
the number of servicemen in
Japan last year but increased its
spending. This resulted from

and services needed to maintain
the huge U. S. military installa
tions here.
Japanese firms received the
largest contracts for coal, trans
portation, wood and wood prod
ucts, office machine repairs and
office supplies. The U. S. spent
more than SI million in Japan
