Gym Class Changed
For Children of
Illinois Minister
Urbania, 111. U.R) School
authorities have retreated and
announced a "modified'' physi
cal education program for two
minister's children who objected
to "immoral dress and unholy
positions" in regular gym
classes.'
The children of Rev. Orval
Lee were suspended "perman
ently Monday for refusing to
attend gym classes. But an an
nouncement of the new school
board decision released by Su
perintendent C. C. Loew Thurs
day reinstated them.
Father Approved
Philip, 12 and Naomi, 13.
started the boycott of gym
classes themselves, said their
father, but he approved it after
he saw a newspaper photo of a
gym class in which a girl was
lying on the floor with an in
structor's hands on her ankles
and hip.
The modified program will al
low the Lee children to attend
classes apart from the rest of the
children, Loew said. They will
not be required to take exer
cises which involve a reclining
or prone position and may wear
whatever they choose.
The program "takes into ac
count certain religious objec
tions," said Loew, and fulfills
state requirements.
He said state requirements
which stipulate that schools
which do not give physical edu
cation may be cut off from state
funds was the main considera
tion in the original suspension.
There are more than 29 mil
lion miles of telephone wire
in the United States.

New York (U.R) Stocks
declined substantially on in
creased trading today and then
met meager support which lift

one to more than two points.
They came back a fair distance
from their lows. Most other sec
