man has be
come an "alba
tross" around
his neck.
There are
times when
Backus wishes
he never had
heard of the
old man, Mr.
MacGoo. Since
Backus began doing the voice of
that cartoon character, he has
won more public notice than in
all his years as a radio comic
and film actor.
But that bodyless voice is a
"hinderance," sighs Backus, to
ward getting dramatic roles in
the movies.
"I know Joe Ferrer, so my
wife and I are in his picture,
"The Great Man," " Backus said.
"But MacGoo cost me other
dramatic parts. I walk into the
producer's office and he falls on
the floor. He can't believe I
could do dramatic parts. He says,
'Do MacGoo for me. Say hello
to my children on the phone'."
Lowest Moment Recalled
His lowest moment, he shud
dered, was at a Christmas party.
"Someone says, 'Zanuck would
like to say a word.' I get all
excited. A big studio executive!
Maybe a role in 'Island in the
Sun.' But the man says, 'Do me
a favor. Do. MacGoo.'
"During '-the filming of 'The
Great Man' the cops who take
tourists around the set would
bring them over and say, 'Do
MacGoo.' You feel like such an
idiot.
"Then there are the kids on
the street who imitate MacGoo.
And parties are impossible!
There's always the man who
puts the lampshade on his head.
You know he'll start talking
like MacGoo."
Backus invented MacGoo's
voice years ago for his night
club act. He used the voice for
the club car character, the one
who always shows you the fam
ily picture and says Scotch and
soda tastes like iodine."
Character Prove Popular
Seven years ago UPA made a
cartoon called "The Musical
I Bear." Backus played the voice
of a near-sighted old gent. He
was such a smash that a reg
ular MacGoo series was launch
ed. Backus is under contract for
12 MacGoo cartoons yearly.
MacGoo has brought him some
happiness in addition to the "Al
batross." An annual MacGoo car
toon festival at UCLA outdraws
top stars. And the voice is so
well known that it often invades
Backus' movie roles.
UPA makes a rough story line
for MacGoo and Backus ad libs
much of the sound track. The
cartoon then is animated to fit
his voice.
One of Backus' best gags was
an ad lib during the Florence
Chadwick channel swim craze.
MacGoo is shown looking at
some long underwear swirling
around a washing machine.
Backus croaks, "Swim, Flor
ence, swim!"

Posthumous Award

lost his life while saving an

sons to be. cited by the Carnegie
Hero Fund Commission for out
standing acts of heroism per

The posthumous award was
made to Warren L. Nott. His
widow, who lives at 4005 Mon
roe street. Milwaukie. will re
ceive a bronze medal in behalf
of her late husband and also
death benefits in the amount of
$60 a month.
