OTI Owls Strengthen OCC
Cage Command by Beating
Southern Oregon 77 to 61
Ashland Oregon Technical
Institute strengthened it posi
tion at the front of the Oregon
Collegiate conference basketball
chase here last night by thrash
ing Southern Oregon college 77
to 61.
It was the fourth victory
against two defeats in the OCC
for the Owls. Southern Oregon
fell into a second place knot
with Eastern Oregon. The Raid
ers are four and four in the loop
and the Mounties of EOC three
and three.
Action was close through the
first 10 minutes of the ruckus

Pittsburgh
Signs Face
At Increase
By UNITED PRESS
No Pittsburgh player is being
asked to take a salary cut this
year and a choice few, like little
Elroy Face, the workhorse of
the Pirates' bullpen, are receiv
ing whopping big raises.
The 5 foot, 8-inch right-hander
signed his 1957 contract today
after earning a nice boost for his
work last season. The 155-pound
forkballer, who picked up that
pitch from ex-Yankee Joe Page
when he had a brief fling with
Pittsburgh, won 12 games and
lost 13 last year in addition to
saving eight other victories.
General Manager Joe L.
Brown of the Pirates has said
there will be no pay cuts this
year and that several players
will receive raises. Face worked
pretty hard for his. He set a new
record for the Pittsburgh club
by appearing in 68 games and
set a major league record for
consecutive appearances when
he pitched in nine straight
games.
Purkey Signs Contract
Right-hander Bob Purkey,
who had a 6-8 record with Holly
wood of the Pacific Coast league
also signed with the Pirates,
giving them a total of 23 play
ers already under contract.
The St. Louis Cardinals report
ed 33 players under contract and
only nine more to go with the
signing of pitchers Jim Davis,
Gary Blaylock and Tom Cheney.
Davis, a left-handed knuckle
baller acquired from the Cubs
last month and since sought by
the Dodgers, had a 5-7 record
.with Chicago and a .368 earned
run average. Blaylock had an
8-5 record with Rochester of
the International league while
Cheney, 'a well thought-of 22-year-old
righthander compiled
10 victories and five losses with
Omaha of the American Associa
tion. Giants Sign Gomes
Pitcher Ruben . Gomez and
Johnny McCall and first base
man Gail Harris all returned
their signed contracts to the
New York Giants, thereby giv
ing the Polo Grounders 20 men
accounted for this year. Gomez,
who had a 7-17 record, may be
dealt before the start of the
season. McCall had a 3-4 record
and Harris, who will get first
shot at first base now that Jackie
Robinson has quit baseball, hit
.270 at Minneapolis.
Spunky Don Zimmer and
rookie catcher Herb Olson were
the 29th and 30th members of
the Dodgers to agree to terms.
Zimmer was on the involuntar
ily retired list after being
beaned last June 23 and will
be trying a comeback. Olson
batted .251 at Fort Worth last
sive backboard control and a
fast break with hot shooting on
the part of John Rhine, Jerry
Fasteen and Ted Fischer to take
command in the tussle. Southern
Oregon tried and had its spurts
but couldn't get together a seri
ous challenge.
Seven Deadlocks
Score was tied seven times In
the opening 10 minutes of the
game as both clubs were cold
and erratic. With 1014 minutes
gone in the mix Fasteen plunked
in a tip-in that made it 16 to 14
and the Owls were on top for
keeps.
Rhine followed with two field
goals and got four free shots.
Fasteen put in three from the
field and Fischer two and Tru
man Williams swished a pair of
gift tosses to give the Techmen
an 18 point lead at 36 to 18.
Halftime score was 40 to 25.
Southern Oregon kept the ac
tion on an even scoring basis in
the early part of the second half
as Dale Bates and Norm Oliva
collected three field goals each.
Then the Owls began to pad
their margin and, when John
McCutcheon hit a jumper with
9V4 minutes contested in the half
the OTI bulge was 22 points at
60 to 38.
Raiders Fire Up
The Red Raiders of the Rogue
sparked up after two other gaps
of 22 in their scrappiest and
Warmest firing of the night. At
this stage Bates sank a pair of
long shots, Bill Hollingsworth
two close-in buckets, a long
jump and two free shots and
John Foust a close-in bucket as
the Raiders made headway
against the OTI ball control
game. Southern Oregon succeed
ed in slicing its deficit to 11
counters at 67 to 56 but that's
the nearest the Raiders could
come to the Owls in the second
half.
Coach Wally Palmberg left
his starting five in the tussle for
three quarters of the game and
each of the five scored in double
figures. Williams was the big
gun with 18 points and 22 re
bounds. Fasteen also had 18 tal
lies and Fischer 16. Oliva with
16 and Bates with 14 were the
high SOC scorers. Bates hit
seven field goals in 10 tries
Oregon Tech shot a warm .411
average from the field and
Southern Oregon .361. The Tech
men fired .390 in the first half
while the Raiders had a cool
.220. Rebounding favored OTI
in the game 51 to 45.
Southern Oregon college won
the jayvee opener 64 to 45.

Idaho Vandals Whip WSC
69-57 In Coast Conference
By UNITED PRESS
The University of Idaho, a cellar-dweller
from way back,
signed the lease over to Washing
ton State Tuesday night and
climbed out of the murky depths
of the Pacific Coast conference
basketball standings.
The Vandals made the step by
defeating the Cougars, 69-57, and
took a spot percentage-wise with
Southern California and Oregon
in sixth place but Idaho's lodg
ing is built on a pretty shaky loss
column.
The present standings are:
California 5-0, UCLA 4-0, Wash

UO SWIMS CANCELLED
Eugene (U.R) Athletic
Director Leo Harris said today
that a lack of interest had re
sulted in cancellation of the
1957 swimming schedule for the
University of Oregon. Harris
said he hoped it was only a
temporary situation.

Stanford 2-3, USC 1-3, Oregon
1-3, Idaho 2-6, and Washington
State 1-5.
There was only one game
played in the California Basket
ball association, too.
The surprising Fresno State
Bulldogs weren't able to add to
their two-game win streak, but
they came as close as they could.
San Jose State held off a last
minute scoring flurry to edge
the Bulldogs, 77-75.
Idaho took an early lead on
Washington State, but the Cou
gars tied it up 59-59 in the sec
ond half with eight minutes re
maining. Then guard Wahylen
Coleman poured through 10
points in the remaining time to
cinch the game for the Vandals.
Schaefer Holds Beck
Third string guard B. J. Schae
fer of Idaho held PCC scoring
ace Larry Beck to 13 points,
while center Gary McEwen
rolled up 17 for the Vandals.
The San Jose-Fresno game
wasn't distinguished for shoot
ing accuracy as neither team hit
for better than 35 per cent from
the floor. However, in spite of
