Look Before You Migrate
I was just reading a fine
article by my much-admired
friend. Sen. Thomas G. Desmond
of New York,
who has done
such wonder
ful work in
plan ning for
the care of the
aged. Writing
in "T o d a y's
Health," he
speaks of the
great tenden
cy for the re
cently retired man to pick up
and move to another state. Many
go in search of a warmer climate
where they will no longer have
to tend the furnace, or shovel
snow, and where they can be
outdoors throughout the year.
Other persons feel a need for
going where living will perhaps
be cheaper so that their small
pension will go further. A num
ber of older people who are suf
fering from arthritis, high blood
pressure, a weak heart, or asth
ma have an idea that they might
be more comfortable in a warm
dry climate like that of the
southwest states.
Many persons have an idea
that they would be perfectly
happy on a little farm some
where. But if they were not
brought up on a farm, and if
they are not strong enough fo.
the hard work on a farm, and
if they hate living in an isolated
place, they had better not sink
all of their savings into a farm.
Many who do this soon find that
they have made a terrible mis
take. Perhaps along comes a
hard winter, or a season too dry
or too wet for plowing, or an
epidemic that wipes out their
stock, and they are broke.
Many old persons will find
themselves very unhappy after
they have cut themselves loose
from their old surroundings, and
particularly from all their old
friends and their relatives. This
is a bad thing for anyone, but
worst for the aged who do not
make new friends easily.
I always say to my elderly pa
tients: "Don't buy a home the
day you move to Florida or
Arizona or 'California. After a
few weeks or months in the state
you may dislike the place, or
your rheumatism or your asth
ma may be worse. Also, if you
buy right-off from a high-pressure
salesman, you may get a
bad deal. Better wait a few
months until you have looked
around and found a place you
can love.
Many persons, on a retire
ment fund, find they must give
up some of their expensive
habits. It is not always easy to
pull in one's belt and live on
much less income than was for
merly available. As Senator Des
mond says, there is plenty of
cheap land still available in this
country where taxes will be low.
But the taxes will be low be
cause there are practically no
services supplied by the commu
nity. An older person should
remember that he is not husky
enough to become a frontiers
man; he is not like the people
who went to California in 1849
in a covered wagon.

Chicago (U.R) Don't ex
pect miracles from titanium, the
new "miracle" metal.
That's the conclusion of a
study conducted by Armour Re
search Foundation of the Illinois
Institute of Technology.
Foundation scientists said ti
tanium is new. exciting and as
sured of a prominent place
among metals. But, like all
metals, it has its limitations.
The Foundation was asked to
conduct the study by the Titani
um Metallurgical Laboratory of
Columbus, Ohia, to determine
the applicability of the metal in
gas turbines for airplanes.
Titanium alloys,' which art
strong and relatively light, can
not withstand as much heat as
certain other metals, the study
showed.
Therefore, the Foundation
said, the future use of titanium
in aircraft engines may be limit
ed to parts toward the front end
of the compressor where tem
peratures are within the metal's
limits.
"Experience indicates that
weight reduction can be achieved
on parts operating at tempera
tures up to 750 degrees Fahren
heit," said Dr. Donald J. Mc
Pherson, assistant manager of
the Foundation s metal research

habit.

Linda D. We have been mar-1
ried two years and my husband
and I are very happy except that
we have one source of trouble
his mother.
I always promised myself I
would be a very good daughter-in-law
and even my husband
will agree that I have done
everything I could to please his
mother. I've done many small
favors for her and I remember
her on all special occasions.
What bothers me about her is
that every time she comes to
visit for a weekend, she goes
around snooping and investigat
ing things exploring drawers
and closets, examining my cloth
ing and my husband's. We don t
have any special secrets we
want to hide, but I do value my
privacy. I want my husband to
tell her not to do things like
that, he refuses.

Earl D. There are some
things you can't tell your own
mother. I know that Mom can
be annoying that way. She al
ways did it to me when I was
at home. It is just motherly way
of making sure that everything
is as it should be.
Linda has been thoughtful and
nice to my mrother, but she
doesn't mention that Mom has
been every bit as nice as she
has. Mom always remembers
special occasions and always
brings a nice gift for her. (
I think that this habit of Mom's
is very trivial and that Linda
is making too much of an issue
out of the whole thing. Most
mothers have some annoying
habits; this surely isn't the worst
of them. I have a feeling that,
underneath, Linda really resents
my mother and her visits.

The Council: Linda is justified
to some extent in her dislike
of her mother-in-law's annoying
habit. Most women would dis
like it and Earl should be a
little more sympathetic with his
wife's point of view about it.
However, Earl may be close to
the true issue when he feels that
underneath her "nice" behavior
Linda has some resentment of
her mother-in-law.
"I always promised myself I
would be a very good daughter-in-law,"
says Linda. Her state
ments indicate that she has tried
to live up to the letter of the
law on the subject but perhaps
not the spirit. Linda lists the
things she has done for her
mother-in-law, but gives no in
dication that she likes, under
stands or is interested in this
woman.
Earl sees his mother's habit as
"just her motherly way of mak
ing sure that everything is as
it should be." Perhaps if Linda
learned to know and like her
mother-in-law, she would see it
in the same light. If a really
warm relationship exisited be
tween Linda and her mother-in-law,
the young woman might
find the habit merely amusing
or she might not be afraid to
give a gentle hint that she
doesn't like to have things touch
ed or moved in her home. As
things stand now Linda is afraid
of revealing her underneath
coldness toward this woman.
Linda should now put her
effort into developing a real con
tact with, her mother-in-law,
rather than executing empty
gestures. She may find the prob
lem will then dissolve by itself.
