Two Weeks Remain
For Address Filing
Portland The United States
immigration and naturalization
sen-ice has reminded aliens in
Oregon that only two weeks re
main in which non-citizens must
file annual address reports as
required by law.
Ernest J. Hover, district direc
tor, pointed out that address re
port forms are available at the
nearest immigration service of
fice or post office for the
convenience of non-citizens re
quired to report their address
to the government each January
under a provision of the Immi
gration and Nationality act of
1952.
Hover said the only non
citizens not required to report
their addresses are persons in
diplomatic status, foreign repre
sentatives assigned to the Unit
ed Nations, and Mexican nation
al contract laborers.
He said persons found guilty
of a willful violation would be
subject to a possible fine, jail
sentence, and deportation.
The immigration official said
approximately 4,800 aliens filed
reports during the first two
weeks of January, slightly be
low the number reporting for
the saint period in 1936.

A young man writes that he
has been utterly miserable, and
much worried about his health.
He has been
going from
one clinic to
a n o t her get
ting examined
from head to
foot at great
cost to his
family, but
n o t h ing has
ever been
found, and he Dr Alvarez
is getting desperate. As he says,
he gets a sort of dizziness at
times, with a feejing of a lump
in his throat that won't go up
or down. He has feeling of great
air hunger, as if he could not
get enough air down deep into
his lungs. He runs to a window,
hoping that there he will find
more air.
His doctors have told him
there is not a single sign of
heart disease, but he is still wor
ried because his heart some
times races or skips a beat and
then thumps in his neck. When
he is frightened, he sometimes
belches for half an hour, or he
gets diarrhea. Often he gets "but
terflies" in his abdomen and a
burning over his stomach. If he
goes out with his girl, he is
likely to become nervous and so
nauseated that he cannot eat
anything. His bowel may then
fill with gas and give him much
distress. He may bloat like a
"poisoned pup."
At times he feels a pressure
in liis brain" and he has 1 pains
that move around in his chest.
His hands are usually so cold
and wet he is ashamed to shake
hands with anyone. Sometimes
he' gets jittery spells when he
feels chilly. Sometimes he vom
its his breakfast. At times he
feels too short of breath to walk
fast, and at other times he can
play baseball comfortably. He
wants to know what is wrong
and what he can do to get well.
He strongly suspects his bad
nerves have come from his moth
er who, for years, was in a state
hospital.
Actually, all his symptoms
are typical of a person who was
born with a poor set of nerves.
Not a single symptom suggests
disease in his chest or abdomen.
I can see' no sense in examining
this poor fellow any further
that can only waste his money.
He will probably always have
to put up with some nervous
ness, and so he might as well
start learning to live with his
nerves. The big thing is not to
get frightened when they start
playing tricks with his heart or
his stomach or the blood vessels
and sweat-glands and muscles in
his skin.
Hypoglycemia
Hundreds of persons still keep
asking me what to do for a
functional type of hypoglycemia
(low blood sugar) that has not
responded to treatment. My an
swer usually is "Forget it; the
diagnosis was probably wrong.
Go to a good clinical laboratory
and get your blood sugar meas
ured. If it is normal, as it prob
ably will be, quit worrying. You
just happened to see a physician
whose hobby is low blood
sugar."
I am happy to say that the
fad of diagnosing this (usually)
supposed disease seems to be
going the way of all fads. Of
late I haven t seen so many per
sons worrying about it; nowhere
near, so many as I used to see
10 years ago. Actually, in prac
tically every case I have seen,
a test of the blood sugar made
in a good laboratory showed
that it was normal; and hence
the doctor who made the diag
nosis must have been misled by
some laboratory technician.
I would never think of treat
ing a patient for hypoglycemia
unless several laboratories had
reported a decidedly low sugar,
and unless the patient was hav
ing most of his distress in the
early morning, when his blood
sugar must be at its lowest. Also,
I would not diagnose hypo
glycemia unless the person could
always get quick relief from
his symptoms by eating some
candy.
Symptom! Cleared Up
Most of the women I saw with
a supposed hypoglycemia could
not have had it as the cause of
their symptoms because some of
their attacks came shortly after
luncheon or dinner, when the
blood sugar is likely to be high;
and in many, the symptoms
cleared up by themselves, or
after the taking of a little black
coffee, or a tablet of aspirin
neither of which would have
influenced a low blood sugar.
Actually, I cannot remember
ever having seen case of so
called "functional" and not can
cerous hypoglycemia in w-hich

which I thought the symptoms
were of the sort that could be
due to a low blood sugar. In
many cases the spells were typi
cally migrainous or nerves in
nature. We physicians must keep
remembering that no symptoms
are produced by a moderate
lowering of the blood sugar.
Symptoms do not appear until
a person's blood sugar has been
dropped way down to 50 mgs.
or less. The normal is some
where between 80 and 120 mgs.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers
will understand that it would
be impossitrle for him to answer
requests for information or to
attempt to diagnose by mail.

a national leader in training
graduates for the pulp and paper
industry has been started and
plans are underway for expan
sion of research work in the
field.
The enlargement of teaching
and research programs in pulp
and paper chemistry has been
prompted by the demand for
trained workers, especially in
the northwest where the in
dustry is making its greatest
growth. .
DrVErvin F. Kurth, professor
of forest products chemistry at
the college, is in charge of the
new program, which operates
within the chemistry department
and the Science Research insti
tute. '
At present, OSC Is one of four
schools offering graduate work
in the field of pulp and paper.
