    Hearings Called on
Rezoning Southeast
Medford Property
Public hearings on rezoning
two southeast Medford areas
were called Feb. 5 by the Med
ford city council last night
A hearing will be held on
change of zone from single fam
ily (Class IA) to multiple family
(class II) of property bounded
by Barnett rd. on the north, and
irrigation canal on the south.
Murphy rd. on the west and the
east city limits
A hearing also will be held on
change of zone from single fam
ily (class IA) to two family (class
IB) of property bounded on the
north by the irrigation canal, on
the south by Alameda St., on the
west by Murphy rd., and on the
east by the city limits.
Both proposed zones are south
of Barnett rd. near the new
Rogue Valley Memorial hospital
Multiple family provides for
apartments, professional offices
and clubs, and two-family zone
provides for residences of not
more than two families per
building.
The zone changes were con
sidered by the council earlier,
but referred back to the plan
ning commission for further con
sideration after objections were
voiced to a proposed limited
commercial zone south and west
of the hospital site
The planning commission.
Office Service
Opens Branch to
Serve 3 Counties
Dana and Hazel Platz, who op
erate Service Unlimited, an em
ployment agency here, have been
appointed area managers for
Russell Kelly Office service, a
national organization which
furnishes temporary office help.
Miss Dana Platz said this is
the first time the office service
has opened a branch in this pop
ulation size area. The area in
cludes Josephine, Jackson and
Klamath counties.
The Kelly service maintains a
(roup of experienced business
women who are "rented" to of
fices for temporary periods of
time ranging from a day to a
month or more. The business
firm desiring temporary help re
quests a girl of certain ability
and pays the service for provid
ing temporary help.
At the completion of the tem
porary assignment, the girl sub
mits to the business firm a time
slip indicating the number of
hours worked. When approved,
the time is forwarded to the
Kelly service, which pays the
girl and bills the business firm,
Miss Platz said.
"Kelly Girls" are tested prior
to an assignment, and are bond
ed, insured and guaranteed, she
said. If the business firm finds
the girl did not do the job for
which she was recommended,
the firm does not pay the serv
ice for the temporary help, Miss
Platz said.
Among' positions for which
Kelly girls are experienced are
stenographers, typists, typist-statistical,
comptometer or Bur
roughs operators, clerks, recep
tionists, billers, switchboard op
erators, and machine or hand
bookkeepers.
The Kelly service here will be
located at 204 Franklin building.
Miss Platz said.
Oregon State Enrollment
Increased I 1 Per Cent
Corvallis 1U.R) The regis
trar at Oregon State college here
today reported an enrollment
increase of 11 per cent over win
ter term registration a year ago.
Sign up for the new term had
reached 6602 by last night.
after reconsideration, renewed
its recommendation for the
changes to multiple and two-family
zones, but withdrew its
recommendation for a limited
commercial zone pending further
investigation.
Max Sig communications was
granted a lease by the city at
the Medford airport. Max-Sig
said it intended to increase the
present facilities to provide ra
dio and electronic repair service.
The council adopted an ordi
nance assessing property owners
for paving on North Keene Way
from Jackson st. to Oregon ave.
Cost of the project was $7.08
and $3.24 per lineal foot. The
S5.24 portion of the assessment
was charged to Hedrick Junior
High school.
City Manager Robert Duff
was authorized to negotiate an
agreement with the Nye and
Naumes Packing company, Med
ford, for construction of a storm
sewer on South Fir st. from
Monroe st. to Melrose ave. near
the company's plant.
Duff said the storm sewer is
scheduled for construction un
der the capital improvement pro
gram in 1958. He added that be
cause a warehouse is subject to
flooding from the existing storm
drainage system, the company
desires to expedite construction
to prevent damage of fruit
stored in the cold storage por
tion of the plant.
The company has offered to
finance materials for the sewer
with the stipulation that Nye
and Naumes is reimbursed in
1958. Duff said material would
cost about $1,400. Total cost of
the project 'is estimated at
S3.335.
The council directed City At
torney E. R. Bashaw to continue
revision of the closing out sale
ordinance. Bashaw said the mu
nicipal court judge declared the
ordinance unconstitutional in its
delegation of legislative power
during a recent court case.
The city attorney added the
revised ordinance would meet
the objection of unconstitution
ality.. The council approved requests
for loading zones to Courtesy
Chevrolet, 227 East Ninth st.,
Medford, and to the California
Oregon Power company, 216
West Main st., Medford.
Courtesy Chevrolet requested
a loading zone on east Ninth st..
adjacent to an alley. The load
ing zone space will be used both
for a loading zone and a drive
way entrance to their display
room.
Copco requested a loading
zone space on South Fir st. near
a transformer building.
Iron, Steel Company
Forms at Camp White
Formation of the White City
Iron & Steel Co. was completed
recently. It was organized by a
group of Medford and Ashland
men to recover and process us
able metal from scrap.
Dave Trudeau, formerly em
ployed by Laughlin Steel com
pany, is general manager of the
firm, which has property in the
White City industrial area for
its operations. The company ob
tains scrap, both old automobiles
and from other sources, and
sorts it out, segregating the more
valuable metals from the junk
type scrap. These are then sold
separately.
If sufficient business is de
veloped, it is tentatively planned
to establish a foundry here, to
carry the sorting and scrap re
covery a step further. Members
of the firm reports that supplies
of scrap are sufficient to permit
continuous operation on a fairly
CONSTIPATED?
new laxative discovery
un-locks bowel blocks
without gag, bloat or gripe
Constipation is caused by
what doctors call a "thrifty"
colon. A "thrifty" colon is one
that, instead of retaining
moisture as it should, does the
opposite: robs the colon of so
much moisture that its con
tents become dehydrated, so
dry that they block the bowel;
so shrunken that they fail to
excite or stimulate the urge
to purge that propels and ex
pels waste from your body.
TO REGAIN NORMAL RECU
LARITY two things are neces
sary. First, the dry, shrunken
contents of your colon which
now block your bowel must be
re-moistened. Second, bulk

at the busy Westlake Medical
Center here.
The dead physician was Dr.
Robert G. deMailly.
Police identified the gunman
as Michael J. Kepp, operator of
a Daly City moving van comp

Snow, Cold, Ice Make
Oregon Roads Hazardous
Salem U.R) New snow, cold
and ice were the main driving
hazards in Oregon today.
Chains were required at De
troit where four inches of new
snow fell. Motorists were ad
vised to carry chains for travel
at Timberline, Warm Springs
junction. Government Camp,
Lapine, Pendleton and John
Day.
DRAWS THE LINE
Santa Rosa, Calif . (U.R) A
young man walked into a liquor
store, leveled a revolver at 68-year-old
Mrs. Mary Capitani and
demanded whiskey and money.
"You're too young." she said
as she handed him $50 but re
fused to let him take a bottle
of whiskey. He fled with a car
ton of cigarettes instead.
Policeman's Gun
Found on Holdup Man
Portland (U.R) Police here
are trying to determine how a
policeman's stolen gun got into
the hands of an accused hold-up
man.
The gun, belonging to Patrol
man James C. Strawder, was
found in the car of Carl Robert
McKenney, 44, Portland, when
McKenney was arrested by Rose
burg police.
Police said that the gun had
been stolen from the precinct
locker room.
McKenney, police said, told
them that he had obtained the
gun from a friend in Reno, Nev.
McKenney is accused of a gro
cerey store holdup here in December.

MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE SEVEH
Former Death Row Inmate Tentatively Wins $8,000 on TV
New York-'U.R) John Resko,
sentenced to death for murder,
tentatively won $8,000 Tuesday
night on CBS's "$64,000 Ques
tion." Resko, 45, of the Bronx, was
sentenced to die in Sing Sing
death house when he was 19 for
a murder that occurred during
a robbery. He spent two years
there awaiting execution. After
the sentence was commuted to
life, he spent 19 years in
Dannemora, N. Y., prison before
he was paroled in 1949.
During the years there he
educated himself on law and
cultural subjects.
Resko, who is an artist and
also the author of a book en
titled "Reprieve," chose an
tiques for his category and cor
rectly answered seven ques
tions. For his $8,000 question he
was asked to identify four man
ufacturers of ceramics from re
productions of their hallmarks.
The first three he successfully
identified as Worcester, Delft
and Capo di Monte.
The fourth, which he identi
fied as Limoges, was described
as Sevres on the answer card.
Since some doubt arises as to
whether or not Limoges is china
ware made in Sevres, Resko was
ruled correct, pending further
confirmation.
He will return to the program
next Tuesday to try for the $16,
000, .or possibly to receive a
1957 Cadillac convertible, if
Tuesday night's answer is ruled
definitelv incorrect.
