mentioned tha fine book of Dr.
George W. Frankel, of Los
Angeles, en
titled "Let's
Hear It." Dr.
Frankell tells
me that, about
three years
ago, a surgeon
performed on
him the opera
tion of "mobil
ization of the
stapes," with
complete restoration of his hear
ing. Now for the first time in
25 years, ha can hear normally
without the help of a hearing
aid. In the operation for mobiliza
tion of the stapes, devised by
Dr. Samuel Rosen of New York,
a tiny bone called the stapes
(stirrup) situated in the middle
ear is loosened up so that again
it can vibrate up and down in
the little window that leads into
the inner ear, where the nervous
part of the hearing mechanism
is situated. Obviously, only those
persons whose deafness is of
the type which is due to the
sticking of the stapes in the
window can hope to get relief
with this operation.
Some of those who are not
helped by this operation can
next try the Lempert operation
in which a new little window is
made between the middle ear
and the inner ear. This allows
the waves of sound to pass
through where they can be per
ceived by a complicated mech
anism something like a tiny
marimba. Dr? Frankel tells me
that recent improvements in the
technique of mobilization of the
stapes make it possible now for
at least 60 per cent of suitable
candidates to get a successful
result.
Obviously, not all deaf per
sons should immediately write
me asking where to go for this
operation. They should first con- i
suit a good ear man to see what i
type of deafness they have.
Tap Worms
Quite a few persons want to ;
know about the symptoms of a
tape worm: how one gets such a
worm, and how one gets rid of
him. Among jesters, a person
who eats inordinately, with a
huge appetite, is supposed to
have a tape worm, but this is
not really true. Another jest is
to the effect that people with
tapeworms can say "we," like
kings and queens and editors!
Actually, tape worms are com
mon in certain countries where
many people are fond of raw
or smoked meats. The ' three
commonest tape worms come
from beef, and pork and fish.
I would never think of eating
so-called "tartar steak" or
ground raw meat. In this coun
try, eating such foods is not so
dangerous as it is in uncivilized
places, because in every slaugh
ter house we have government
inspectors to condemn animals
found to have tape worms in
the bowel, with little nodules
scattered throughout the mus
cles. These nodules contain the
encysted form of the. worm. I
wouldn't think of eating raw
or poorly-cooked pork, not only
because of the danger of getting
a tape worm, but because of
the greater danger of getting
trichinosis, which is an infesta
tion of the muscles by a tiny
worm.
In the lake district of Min
nesota, the Finns sometimes ac
quire a dangerous type of tape
worm which produces a severe
anemia. They brought it with
them from Finland, and then
managed to give it to certain
fresh water fishes. Now, if one
eats such a fish smoked and
not cooked one can get' the
tape worm which is called a
Bothriocephalui.
Usually, people who get a
tape worm should soon find" out
about it. As soon as the worm
gets long enough, bits of it break
off and are passed with the
stool. Especially when a person
has diarrhea, segments of the
worm are likely to appear in
the toilet bowl. The person may
then pass a couple of yards of
worm made up of little white
segments looking like bits of
tape. These segments move a
bit, showing that they are alive.
Try To Gat Rid Of It
Anyone with a tap worm
ought to try to get rid of it
because it may produce some
indigestion and abdomnial dis
comfort. The great difficulty in getting
rid of a tape worm is to cause
the head to come away. As long
as the head hangs onto the in
side of the bowel, a new worm
will grow out. The great trick in
getting rid of the head it not to
take a laxative before the anti
worm medicine is taken. Most
of the books insist that the per
son be given this laxative, but
there is absolutely no need for
it, and in most cases it warns
the worm to dig in and hang on.
There are several medicines
that are commonly given to
drive out tape worms none of
them entirely satisfactory.

grown by commercial florists.
Floriculturist Gail Beck said
he experimented with the plant
and obtained blue, crimson, rose
and scarlet petals that remained
attractive for three weeks.
The plants take little care or
space and seed isn't expensive.
Beck said. Each plant produces
about 15 flowers, each over two
inches across at the top.
