    Langlie Appointment Seen Risky;
Neuberger Balks on Ellsworth
By A. ROBERT SMITH
Mail Tribuna Corrdspondant
wasmngton The word is go
ing around that any presidential
appointment of Arthur B. Lang
lie would cause quite a ruckus
in the Senate from colleagues
of Sen. Warren G. Magnuson.
Tmti?y'is! There has
x a I . :
ued specula'
tion that Lang-
lie might be
given some
nigh post in
the Eisenhow
er administra
tion, for he has
'been highly
a. Kokt. mii r e g a rded by
the president and White House
officials such as Sherman Adams.
It was they who persuaded him
to run for the Senate against
Magnuson.
But reports are circulating
among Democrats and Republic
ans that enough senators would
consider Langlie "personally
obnoxious" because of the type
of campaign he waged against
Magnuson to make such an ap
pointment risky.
Washington state Republicans
have reportedly been tipped off
about this in order to avoid an
embarrassing situation involv
ing Langlie.
If. 'HI
Sen. Richard L. Neuberger
(D-Ore.) says he would "take
another look" at any appoint
ment of former Congressman
Harris Ellsworth (R-Ore.) to the
Federal Communications Com
mission, which has been rumor
ed. Ellsworth telephoned Neuberg
er before Christmas to enlist his
endorsement for a Job in the
administration, at that time be
lieved to be on the Civil Service
Commission. Neuberger said he
would support him.
Later reports that Ellsworth
might be given a post on the
FCC change the situation, said
Neubeger, who would want to
question the defeated lawmaker
about his views on the radio
field before committing himself
to back him.
Sen. Frank Lausche (D-Ohio)
demonstrated successfully that
there are two ways to steal the
limelight on the opening day of
Congress and in so doing drama
tize your political independence.
The first way was illustrated
by Sen. Wayne Morse four years
a so when he strode Into the
chamber carrying a folding
chair which he planted in the
center aisle, dramatically point
ing out that he had left the
Republican party and not yet
joined the Democratic party.
What Morse did with dramat
ics, Lausche did by creating
silent suspense about how he
would vote in reorganizing the
Senate and when he voted with
his party, like every other Dem
ocrat was doing, he was regard
ed as a hero for whom all the
Democrats stood up and cheered.
Idaho's baby-faced Sen. Frank
Church is running quite a risk
when he wears a blue suit and
black tie, the costume of con
gressional pageboys. He looks
even younger than his 32 years.
but claims he isn't bashful about
the contrast he presents with the
grayhaired and bald colleagues
that surround him.
"If my age is a liability," he
said, "it isn't anything I can't
outgrow."
Church is the third youngest
man ever elected to the Senate.
Sen. Russell Long (D-La.) was
only 30 when he came to Wash
ington eight years ago. And he
was nosed out by Sen. Henry
Clay back in 1806 who was only
29 years and six months when
he was elected to fill an un
expired term. This violated the
constitutional provision that a
senator must be 30 years old.
but no one seemed to object.
"This was occupied by Doug
las McKay, who was defeated
running for the Senate," said
the knowledgeable real estate
lady.
"I know," said the apartment
hunter. "I'm Mrs. Wayne Morse.'
