ADVICE FOR HUSBANDS
In the New Yorker I recently
saw a delightful note taken from
The Journal-American. The writ
er said what is
so true, that
when a man
comes home at
the end of the
day, what he
wants most is
peace and
quiet. But his
wife may not
want these
things. She has
been alone all day and perhaps
bored with no one to talk to
so she starts an argument. She
wants to be noticed, and not
just ignored by the man, who
sits there smoking and reading
his paper. Hence often she gets
more and more annoyed until
she bawls him out and starts a
fight. She may not be so much
sore at him, as just in need of
some excitement. She is like the
colonel's wife who, before they
were to go out to dinner at the
general's, came down stairs in
her nightgown. ."Goodness graci
ous," said her husband, "What
are you doing in that?" "Well,"
said the wife, "now that you
have at last noticed what I am
wearing, I'll go up and change!"

should occasionally change his
technic, and on leaving in the
morning, should take his wife
by both ears, give her a lusty
smack on the lips, tweak her
nose playfully and say "Goodbye,

The editor suggested that the
man had better watch out for a
f!ower-pot that might come whiz
zing past his ear; but my wife
says that, when he comes home
that night, he is likely to find
a much happier and much more
loving wife! Research-minded
husbands can now run a test to
see who is right!
Tenosynovitis
People ask me what tenosyno
vitis is, and my answer is that
the word is made up of three
Greek roots which mean a ten
don, the oily fluid contained in
the sheath of the tendon, and
inflammation: in other words, it
is an inflammation of the sheath
through which a tendon runs.
What is it due to? I doubt if any
one is sure as to the cause, but
it seems probable that this dis
ease is related to fibrositis and
arthritis. The commonest cause
of aches in the muscles, tendons,
bursas (little sacs which serve
as pulleys for tendons) and tis
sues around joints, is fibrositis,
and this is a sort of milder broth
er of arthritis. It does not pro
duce the deformity and crippling
that the worst forms of arthri
tis produce. The treatment of
tenosynovitis is usually hot baths
and light massage.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his read
ers will understand that it would
be impossible for him to answer
requests for information or to
attempt to diagnose by mail.

too much ... we ought to tell heri
parents.
Maria D. It's childish and
silly to go squealing.
Esthtr H. I wonder what you
can do about a person who is on
the road toward becoming an al
coholic. My friend Marie and I are very
much worried about a third
friend, Helen, who drinks far
too much. We are all girls in our
early 20 s and go out together a
lot. We like Helen very much.
She is a swell person and very
lively and charming, but every
time we go out on dates together,
she drinks so much the boys are
really shocked. She is able to
hold her liquor pretty well, but
I've noticed she drinks more and
more all the time.
Marie and I have spoken to
her about it, but she just laughs
at Os and says we've been read
ing too much propaganda about
alcoholism. Her drinking em
barrasses me very much and I
feel it gives men the wrong im
pression about all of us. I think
we ought to tell Helen's parents
about it, but Marie disagrees.
Marie D. I think it is childish
and silly to go squealing to
Helen's parents. She is an adult
and has a right to do what she
wants even if it's wrong. In any
case, it's not our place to tip off
her parents.
There is another problem as
well. Helen does not get along
well with her parents. She says
they have always been very strict
and harsh with her and she feels
very antagonistic toward them.
I'm afraid if we tell her parents,
it will trigger a big blowup and
Helen will leave home and will
be worse off than ever and
we'll be responsible.
I'm also embarrassed by
Helen's drinking, but I feel that
since we can't do anything about
it, we should just keep quiet. As
long as we don't drink much and
behave ourselves, nobody will
get the wrong impression about
us. After all, we can't be con
sidered responsible for her ac
tions. Th Council: This is a ticklish
question. In another case, alert
ing the parents to what is going
on might be helpful. If Helen
really is so antagonistic toward
her parents, however, the blow
up Marie foresees is a Strong
possibility.
But Marie carries the hands
off policy a little too far. In spite
of the fact that she and Esther
are not responsible for Helen's
behavior and should not be con
sidered so, people will tend to
associate them with her. This is
inevitable and it is the reason
both girls are embarrassed.
. For their sakes and for Hel
en's, these girls should put their
attitudes down on the line. They
should tell Helen they find her
behavior embarrassing, and let
her knows- they do not want to
include her in their activities if
she keeps it up. This may help
to bring Helen up short. She may
change, but if she does not, the
girls would do better" without
her company. It may seem mean
but it is the best way. If Helen
is becoming an. alcoholic, she
needs more expert help than her
friends can give her.

Sales Show Drop
The sale of bicycle license
tags to Medford youths this
year is far below the number
sold at this time last year, city
police have announced.
About 419 license tags have
been sold for 1957 bicycle riders,
police said, compared to 542 sold
at this time in 1956.-
Licenses are not required on
bicycles outside the Medford
limits, they said. Officers added
bicycle riders from the county
using Medford streets must con
form to the city ordinance de
manding bicycles be licensed.
Police said licensed bicycles
are an aid to them in finding
lost bicycles as well as traffic
violators.
George Boldt spent millions
on Boldt Castle ort Heart Island
in the St. Lawrence River. The

completed when Mrs. Boldt died
