Clara S. My husband is the
hie - of - the - party, but it em
barrasses me.
Elliot S. I like to let my hair
down in company.
Clara S. My husband and I
met when we were in our teens.
He was the life-of-the-party then
and I used to think he was pretty
funny, and I was proud of him.
Now. however, we're practically
middle-aged and he carries on
the same way he did then. I no
longer think it's funny and I
doubt whether anyone else does.
The fact is I don't care what
anyone else thinks, but I hate
to see my husband make a clown
of himself. He has no dignity at
all. He is the butt of all jokes
at parties. He talks and laughs
louder than anyone else. Some
times I am so embarrassed I
get up and walk out of the room
when he is performing. I don't
want to go out with him any
more if he's going to act like
that.
Elliot S. It is Clara who
makes things embarrassing, not
I. When we are out together,
she constantly tells me to shut
up, lower my voice or not tell
that story again. Everyone else
may be waiting to hear what I
have to say, but they have to
wait until Clara storms out of
the room to hear it. Then they
ask. "What was that story you
wanted to tell?"
I like to relax and let my hair
down when I'm with people. I
like to see people have a good
laugh. Why should I have to be
on my dignity when I'm with
friends? Everybody but my wife
tells me they enjoy my company.
Clara even criticizes the way
I act with our kids. I like to
joke around with them. We dress
up and put on skits and their
friends love to watch. But Clara
says I'm teaching them to be
like me.
The Council: It may be a com
fort to Clara to know that her
problem is not unique. Women
seem to value dignity in social
relations more than men, and
many wome-.i grit their teeth
when their husbands go into
their act or tell stories.
But Clara fails to apply any
criticism to her own social per
formance. From what both she
and her husband say, it is pretty
poor. A wife who tells her hus
band to keep quiet or walks out
of the room when he is holding
the floor causes acute embar
rassment, and puts a pall on the
entire party. Her husband's con
duct may be enjoyed by many
people and bore a few others,
but hers distresses everyone and
is inexcusable.
Clara seems unable to accept
the fact she has married an
extrovert and born performer.
Such persons add a lot of zest
to the lives of others. Their per
formances may not always be in
good taste, but the individual
himself is usually appreciated
for his high spirits and friendli
ness. If Clara would grant her hus
band his natural right to full
freedom in the home, she might
find he is capable of toning down
a bit in company. A father like
Elliot is a boon to children, but
Clara's criticism is teaching them
a narrow-minded and petty dis
like of him, and of fun in gen
eral. Clara would stand a chance
of influencing her husband if she
learned to appreciate him and
break down her own petty inhi

Sfafe Supreme Court
Reverses Decree
Salem U.R) The State Su
preme court Monday reversed a
decree in an action brought by
the state and the Douglas Forest
Protective association to recover
costs incurred in extinguishing
a forest fire.
The court held that the own
ers of the land, Peter and Levi
Gourley, were required by stat
ute to use every reasonable ef
fort to control the fire and that
this statutory duty was not suf
ficiently explained to the jury.
An appeal by Cloyd B. Makin
son, a Eugene school teacher,
was dismissed as moot when the
court found he had been return
ed to full-time teaching. Makin
son had sued school district No.
4 in Lane county when he was
placed on halftime due to de
creased enrollment.
Judge Sentences Man
To 'Life' With Wife
Hollister, Calif. (U.R) Cruz
Bocanegra, 33, given a choice be
tween "life" and a six months'
sentence, chose the longer.
Judge Lorena M. Johnson was
told by Bocanegra's common-law
wife Monday that he not only
struck her but refused to marry
her and legitimize their six chil
dren. "I'm going to give you life,"
the judge said. "I'm sentencing
you to marry this girl. Other
wise, you'll have to serve six
months."

Health doctors are now coating
fleas with radioactive substances
so they can learn how fleas
spread disease.
The U. S. Public Health Ser
vice and the California medical
center use Cerium 144, a rare
earth, as a tracer.
Using the radioactive tag, the
scientists tagged fleas on wild
rodents and, with simple radiation-detecting
equipment, follow
ed their life cycle and migration
among host animals.
