letin published by the National
Society for Medical Research.
that many of
the persons
who love to
fight all mea
sures that are
des i g n e d to
conserve the
public health
have united
under the ban
ner of an or
gan! z a t i o n
Dr Alvarez
called most inappropriately
a Health Federation. It has al
ways interested me to see that
whenever a group of persons
want to fight the Salk vaccine
for polio, or vaccination against
smallpox, or vaccination of dogs
against rabies, or the improve
ment of medical colleges, or the
proper licensing of physicians,
or the persecution of quacks, a
remarkable lot of bed-fellows get
together.
As the National Society for
Medical Research people say,
one finds in the new Federation
anti-vaccinationists of all kinds.
One finds, of course, antivivisec
tionists, whose main animus is
against the medical profession;
one finds faith healers, also some
ministers of the Gospel, some
cancer quacks, some chiroprac
t o r s, naturopaths, naprapaths
and such; and, of course, many
crack-pots who are against ev
erything. Finally, one finds
many good people who, I -am
sad to say, were once outraged
by some unfortunate experience
they had at the hands of a phy
sician Or a hospital.
Many times a year everyone
in a city with a grievance against
scientific medicine will join in
an attack on the health officer
an attack designed to keep him
from doing his duty, which is to
protect the public health. He,
a highly-trained expert hired by
the people to guard them against
epidemics, is told what not to
do, by people who know almost
nothing about medicine! Aren t
we humans funny!
Children's Shoes
A while ago, in the Journal of
the American Medical Associa
tion, Dr. Louis Starr, an ortho
pedist in New York, had an in
teresting article on children's
shoes. He answered many of the
questions that mothers ask
about their children's feet. 4
He said that a baby's shoes
should be pliable so as to inter
fere as little as possible with the
motion of the feet. A weak foot
is one which, when the body's
weight comes on it, flattens out,
and tends to roll inward. A per
son with weak flattish feet tends
to stand and walk with his toes
pointing outward instead of
straight ahead; and in time this
makes matters much worse for
him. High shoes are better for
a baby than low ones, if only be
cause he or she can't pull them
off so easily. Later, the child
is better off with low shoes, or
none at all.
Shoes for children must al
ways be carefully fitted by a
competent salesman. They
should be neither too large nor
too tight. A mother must re
member that a child ofen out
grows his shoes before he can
wear them out. He should have
new ones fitted as soon as the
old ones begin to be too small.
The mother should note how
far the big toe is from the front
of the shoe. This distance should
never be less than a quarter of
an inch. When the shoes are
bought, this distance should be
from 'z to 3A of 'an inch. The
ball of the child's foot should
come where the shoe bends

easily. When the child raises his
heel and bends forward, the
sides of the shoes should not
gape outward. As the child
walks, the back part of the shoe
should not be slipping and rid
ing up and down. This will make
blisters. The shoes should be
comfortable for the child.
The greatest wear should
come on the outer half of the
back of the heel of the shoe.
Wear in unusual places on the
shoe shows that the child has
an abnormal way of walking.
In a large family it is a poor
practice to hand down shoes
from one child to nother they
are not likely to fit well enough.
Going bare-foot is good for a
child as it exercises his feet. As
a boy living in the tropics I al
ways pulled off my shoes and
stockings the minute I came
home from school; it was such
fun to go bare-foot.
For certain types of deformity
of the feet the orthopedist must
give special instructions to a
shoe-maker.
Polyps In The Nose
Dozens of people ask me what
to do about polyps in the nose.
Usually the nose and throat men
remove them quickly in the
office with what is called a
snare. It is a loop of wire which,
when pulled back through a
little tube, bites through the
base of the little pearly ovoid
tumor, about as big as a peanut.
These polyps are benign, which
means that they are not can
cerous.
Usually the cause of the
polyps appears to be an inflam
mation of one of the sinuses
Sometimes something can be
done for that, but often it can't
be cured. Some of these persons
with polyps have asthma. In
many cases the polyps will re
turn, but then they can be
"snared" out again.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers
will understand that it would
be impossible for him to answer
requests for information or to
attempt to diagnose by mail.
