Arrested by Police
In Hungary Friday

press correspondent, arrested in
Budapest Friday and held for
eight hours, said Saturday "the
longest hours of my life" were
spent in a grubby room guarded
by Hungarian police carrying
tommyguns.
Richard Kilian, regular New
York correspondent of the Ex
press was arrested Friday with
Ronald Farquhar of Reuters and
Eric Wahar, an Austrian work
ing for Associated Press. They
were released Friday night.
Kilian said the three corres
pondents had gone to the Czepel
Island Industrial Center near
Budapest to see if it was still on
strike.
' Going back to their parked
car, four policemen, all carry
ing tommyguns, and a plain
ciothesman arrested them.
Token To Headquarter
They were taken across a
large square to police bead
quarters at 3:50 p.m.
"Inside the dimly-lit building
our papers were checked and
then taken upstairs to the Soviet
commandant," Kilian wrote in
his story filed from Budapest.
"We were put under guard in
a room with a bed covered with
a tattered blanket, a desk, and
three chairs. Two Hungarian
policemen sat with their tommy
guns across their laps three feet
from us."
Just before seven o'clock, he
wrote, a police officer told theijg
they would be taken back to
Budapest. Despite their protests,
they were not allowed to tele
phone. In Budapest they were taken
to central police headquarters.
For two hours Kilian sat while
Wahar and Farquhar were taken
off for questioning. All the while
he was guarded by tommygun-
carrying policemen with are-
you-a-spy looks.
Gets New York Greeting
Finally, Kilian said, he was
taken in for questioning, and
was greeted by a man who said
"in the finest New York accent
Hi Ya. So you're from New
York. Well I spent a lot of them
there too'."
Kilian was questioned on why
he had been near the factory.
"It turned out after all that I
did not have a certificate from
the foreign ministry in Russian
and in Hungarian, a certificate
which would allow me to work
as a journalist in Hungary. But
before I could leave I had to
admit that I was 'wrong.'
' I had to say that no police
man manhandled me. Tne pres

At midnight, the three men
were "ceremoniously ushered
back" home with a police escort
through the deserted streets.

Board dismissed a petition which
asked jurisdiction over produc
tion and maintenance employes,
truck-drivers and plant clerical
employes on Oahu.
Standard Oil opposed the peti
tion on grounds the employes
were adequately represented by
a unit covering employes in sev
en western states and the terri
tories of Hawaii and Alaska.
The union's petition originally
was dismissed by NLRB exaaain

action affirmed the dismissal.
