Directing Remarks
At School Teacher

farmhand has denied yelling
"Hello, baby" at an attractive
white schoolteacher before he
was allegedly flogged and ab
ducted by seven white men.
Jesse Woods, 39, testifying
during the trial of the seven
men, said Monday he did not
make the remark to the teacher,
Mary Evelyn Hill, nor to any
other white woman Oct. 28, the
day of his abduction.
The dark-haired teacher, wear
ing a tight-fitting suit, appeared
in the courtroom Monday, but
did not testify during the open-

The seven central Florida men
are facing charges of false i
pnsonment and aggravated as
sault. They are accused of ab
ducting Woods from a jail cell
where he had gone for protec
tion, and assaulting him.
Woods had returned to jail
following arraignment on drunk
enness and disorderly charges
after noticing that he and his
father were being followed by
several cars on their way home.
His father had put up his bail.
Shortly after being accommo
dated by police. Woods said,
"two boys shined a light in the
jail and said, 'There he is."'
"I lay down under a cot In
another cell . . . they came into
the jail and hit me on the nose
and face, he testified.
His assailants, Woods said,
carried him into a car, drove
off and then abandoned him.
"I didn't see anybody well
enough to recognize them
Woods told the court.
After he was abandoned,
Woods disappeared and was fear
ed dead. FBI officials found him
staying with a blind Negro
preacher in Andalusia, Ala.

12-Month School
Term Discussed
For Colleges
Portland (U.R) The State
Board of Higher Education,
its meeting here yesterday, gave
a tentative look at a 12-month
class year at state schools but
was told that the plan has "defi
nite liabilities."
Board member William Walsh
of Coos Bay asked Dr. O. Mere
dith Wilson, president of the
University of Oregon, what he
thought of a plan that would
keep state colleges and the uni
versity in operation a full 12
months Instead of the present
nine.
Not Entirely Successful
Dr. Wilson replied that similar
operations tried at the end of
World War II in some Gl-crowd
ed schools were not considered
entirely successful, both from
student end faculty viewpoints.
Dr. J. F. Cramer, president of
Portland State College, said the
plan might work more profit
ably at his urban college than
at campus-type schools because
most of the student body lived
in Portland and held year-round
jobs scheduled to fit their class
room programs.
The board heard a report that
enrollments 'in summer session
courses were on the increase
with a registration of 6948 on
all state campuses. At the Uni
versity, 75 per cent of the en
rollment was school teachers. At
Portland State only 25 per cent
were school teachers.
Architects Named
The board also named Burns.
Bear, McNeil & Schneider archi
tects for new physical plant
shops at the University of Ore
gon Medical School; Church,
Newberry & Boehr for a third
dormitory at the University; and
Robert Keeney of Medford to
design a new science building
at Southern Oregon College.
Members approved' the names
of Cordley Hall for a new agri
culture building at OSC and
Weatherford hall for the present
men's dormitory at the Corval-
lis campus.

Langley Amends
Civil Rights Suit
Portland (U.R) District at
torney William Langley of Mult
nomah county yesterday filed
an amended complaint in Fed
eral Court in which he seeks S2
million for deprivation of his
civil rights.
Langles last July brought suit
against Attorney General Rob
ert Y. Thornton, James B. Elkins
and the Oregonian seeking SL
million in compensatory and
punitive damages.
His amended complaint also
names Secretary of State Earl T.
Newbry; Police Chief Jim Pur
cell Jr.; Michael J. Frey, pub
lisher of the Oregonian, and
Robert C. Notson, William Mor
rish, Herbert Lundy, William
Lambert and Wallace Turner,
the latter five all employees of
the Oregonian.
Langley, who was indicted by
a grand jury here last summer,
said he believed the parties
named in his suit acted together
to deprive him of his civil rights
by the use of illegal telephone
and room-conversation record
ings and illegal use of the Ore
gon Voters Pamphlet and other
acts.
Langley was indicted for mal
feasance in office and with con
spiring to open Portland to gam
bling.
