the subjects, and library require
ments are increasing geomet
rically. The libraries of the sys
tem reached the one million
book" mark- the last biennium
and are already one-tenth on the
way to the second million.
The saturation point, has ben
rerched in some college com
munities in their ability to pro
vide off-campus housing for
students. In the future an in
creasing proportion of the stud
ent body will have to be housed
in facilities provided by .insti
tutions or denied admittance.
Higher education is not only
responsible for the instruction
of students coming to the camp
uses, but also the use and ex
tension of its skills and know
ledge to improve the life of all
the people of the state. For
example, studies show one of
Oregon's principle sources of
income agriculture directly
benefited from research com
pleted in 1954 by an estimated
income increase of million
dollars.
Grants Double
While grants of private and
federal funds for specific re
search have doubled over- the
of the institutions, used to sup
port basic research, have re
mained at a token level. .j
Curricula at the colleges of
education in Monmouth, Ash
land, and La Grande were ex
panded during the last two "years !
to ' include secondary education
and general studies degree pro
grams, and Portland State col
lege became a four-year.degree-granting
institution.
Consideration is being given i
to a junior college program and j
a more selective admissions, pol-.!
icy limiting enrollment to those i
opportunities for border-line
students to demonstrate such I
