Fire Chief Reviews
Ways of Preventing
Fires at Christmas
Medford Fire Chief Gordon
Baker today urged citizens to
acquire Christmas decorations
that are fire resistive or that
have been tested for safety, that
will bear a UL tag denoting Un

Baker recommende'd that elec
trical toys or toys that produce
heat beara UL tag. A ULtagged
toy will not shock the user 'or
start a fire, he said.
The fire chief stated that care
should be used in purchasing
chemical sets for children. Toys,
requiring alcohol, kerosens, gas
oline or carbide lamps may be
hazardous with children, he said.
Discussing Christmas trees,
.Baker said it is safer to select
a small one. "Keep the tree out
doors until a few days before
setting it up," he said.
When bringing the tree inside
cut the butt slantwise to open
the pores, then stand it in a tub
of water. Baker recommended.
He warned that people should be
wary of chemicals or other 'sub
stance sold for "fire-proofing"
trees. 0

My last two suits were made

Plans for Nursing
Profession to Seek
Law Revision Told
Plans of the nursing profes
sion in Oregon to seek a revision
in the state law governing nurs
ing were reported today by Mrs.
Don Monteith, 25 North Keene
Way, president of District 4
(Jackson county) of the Oregon
State Nurses association.
Mrs. Monteith said a draft of
a proposed amending bill was
adopted at the recent state con
vention of the association in Eu
gene. It provides for the first
major changes in nursing legis
lation since the original law was
passed in 1911.
Purpose of the act, according
to Mrs. Monteith, is to regulate
the practice of professional
graduate nurses.
Define Profession
It would more closely define
the profession, Mrs. Monteith
pointed out, and provide for the
examination and issuance of li
censes for registered profession
al nurses, and provide for the
accreditation of schools of nurs
ing in the state.
The act will provide that if
a registered nurse had not prac
ticed professional nursing in any
state for five years, the board
of nursing examiners would re
quire the applicant to demon
strate ability before reissuing a
license. The applying nurse
would have to undergo a super
vised experience in nursing
practice as designated by the
board.
It will also provide for ex
aminations and qualifications
for anyone designated a regis
tered nurse and would give
OSNA considerable police pow
er over such . nurses. Grounds
for revocation and suspension of
licenses are also provided.
Since the present law does not
clearly state the powers and
duties of the board to survey all
schools of nursing in the state
and to accredit such schools
as fulfilling the requirements,
these provisions have been add
ed to clarify current functions
of the board, Mrs. Monteith said.
Responsibility
The positions of responsibility
held by the registered nurse
make it imperative that she be
qualified by education in accred
ited schools of nursing and that
practice be governed by regula
tions that relate to her know
ledge, duties, functions, perfor
mances and personal integrity,
she added.
Mrs. Nova Young. Portland,
chairman of the legislative com
mittee for OSNA, pointed out
at the convention that the medi
cal profession has had a Medi
cal Practice Act for many years.
But, she said, nursing has chang
ed and the profession feels it
needs a new law to define more
closely the responsibilities of a
nurse.
For instance, Mrs. Young ex
plained, the new act would en
dorse the modern practice of
having a nurse give' a hypoder
mic or other intramuscular or
intravenous piercing of tissues.
Mrs. Young said that it is
common practice for a physic
ian's registered nurse to give
such "shots" but no law has ever
made it legal or ethical practice.
She added that such action
would be taken only under the
doctor's orders.

Advisory Board Posts
L. L. (Doc) Simpson was re
elected chairman and B. L. Nut
ting reelected vice chairman of
the 15-man Oregon and Cali
fornia advisory board for the
Medford forest district recently.
The board approved a sale
plan for an estimated 140,000,
000 board feet of O and C
timber in 1957, an increase of
about 40,000,000 more than the
amount which probably will be
sold in 1956.
The plan will include 61,000,
000 board feet in the Jackson
master unit, 51.000.000 board
meet in the Josephine master
unit and 13.000,000 board feet in
the Klamath unit.
Available Data
Based on available data, the
allowable annual sustained yield
timber harvest from O and C
lands in the Medford district
is 122,000,000 board feet. How
ever, the harvest budget op
erates on a five-year average.
Since sales during previous years
have been less than 122,000,000
board feet, a surplus will be
available next year.
District Forester E. K. Peter
son of the bureau of land man
agement said interest was in
dicated in having more federal
timber placed on the market be
cause of the acute shortage of
available timber.
He reported that BLM forest
ers would make an attempt to
put the indicated volume of
BLM timber up for sale without
reducing forest management.
The district is still short of per
sonnel and operating funds in

Consider Withdrawel
The board also considered the
proposed recreational with
drawal of 15,000 acres of O and
C lands along Rogue river. The
board adopted a resolution in
dicating it was interested in the
overall use of the land and
thought a compromise could be
reached on the amount of land
withdrawn.
The advisory board requested
that the secretary of interior
give consideration to certain
mineralized areas as determined
by the state department of
geology and mineral industries.
Because new surveys are need
ed to determine the boundaries
of federal lands in this area, the
board recommended that a ca
dastral engineer be assigned the
district on a permanent basis.
A projected timber access
program extending to 1960 and
involving 240 miles of perman
ent roads at an estimated cost
of S8.000.000, was discussed.

Gerry Pearson Speaks
At Lions Club Meet
Gerry Pearson, public rela
tions director of Hood River Dis
tillers, Inc., discussed the HRD
vodka processing plant in Hood
River at a Medford Lions club
meeting Tuesday.
Hood River Distillers, she
pointed out, is the only regis
tered distillery in the northwest
and the only vodka processing
plant in the World making vodka
from "pear neutral spirit."
One reason for the popularity
of the HRD vodka, she explain
ed, is its "breathless after ef
fects." HRD also contains less
than 20 calories, she added, low
er than any other vodka or alco
holic beverage.
Clarifying a statement in
Tuesday's Mail Tribune, Miss
Pearson said the Hood River
distillery has paid about $5,000,
000 in federal taxes during the
last five .years, instead of pay
ing that amount next year as
stated.
Referring to a statement that
"Drink Your Way Out of Debt"
was the company slogan, she
said the company had no such
slogan. She spoke at the Jackson
County Chamber of Commerce
Roundtable Monday.
