Hundreds of fat women keep
begging their doctors to find
something wrong with their
g.Iands, and
par ticularly
their thy roid
gland. They
want to blame
their over
weight on
their glands so
that then their
doctor can
give a g 1 a n d
Or Alvarei extr act that
will work a cure without all
the annoyance of a diet. I sym
pathize with these women, and I
wish I could find in them the
glandular defect that they want,
but I can very rarely succed.
During the 25 years when I was
at the Mayo Clinic, I saw thou
sands of stout women being
thoroughly examined by experts
on glandular disease. I saw them
have estimates made of their
basal metabolic rate (a test for
thyroid trouble) but practically
always the verdict was that the
glands were all right and the
whole difficulty was with the
w o m a n s marvellous appetite.
She was hungry all the time, and
the reason for this seemed usual
ly to be that she had several an
cestors who were greatly overweight.
I know some people will
doubt this, but they ought to
see the new roly-poly variety of
mice, which inherit their obesity
The fat mice breed fat mice.
I remember a pleasant, nice-
looking, very stout young wo
man who came to me years ago
to be reduced. She weighed 330
pounds,. Because my office scale
was calibrated only up to 300
pounds, I asked her if, during
the first few months while I
was getting her weight down, she
would mind weighing herself
on the drugstore scales across
the street from my office. She
said with a sad smile; "No, I
would prefer not to do that be
cause the minute. I get on those
scales, everyone nearby rushes
over to- see what I weigh." I
remember also her statement
that her mother and her four
sisters all weighed over 250
pounds. They all just loved to
eat, and the mother loved to
have them eating in her house.
Hence, often, they gathered at
mother s where she had a refrig
erator full of fat pork sweet
breads and other rich foods
I which all of them ate in large
amounts, as i rememDer, aner
I had taken about 75 pounds off
of the woman, her will-power
petered out, and she quickly
went back up to her old 330
pounds.
What I must keep emphasiz
ing is the folly of a naturally
stout person's going on some
freak and very narrow and hunger-producing
diet. Since a stout
person, if he or she is to stay
thin, must practically always
stick to a reducing diet for life,
it must be one that will not be
too boring or disgusting. It must
contain all the substances that
are needed for the maintenance
of health. Few people can stand
a freak diet for more than a few
weeks.

neton, 16, should get his contro
versial "Elvis Presley hairdo"
cut.
W. R. Booker, superintendent
of Muskegon . Heights schools,
said he had no quarrel with
Robert's haircut. But he said he
thought the teenager should get
his hair cut because publicity
connected with the hair style
would be "harmful to his fu
ture."
Robert has been banned from
two high schools near his Wash
ington, Mich., home because he
refused to get his hair cut. He
decided to apply for admission
to the Muskegon Heights High
school, 200 miles from his home,
after Booker said he thought
"the question of a child's hair
style should be left to his parents."
