Arch Work Returns
To Portland Office
After Iraq Visit
R. A. (Arch) Work, Portland,
head of the water supply fore
casting section of the watershed
planning branch, U.S. soil con
servation service, returned to
his office this week after spend
ing several months in Iraq as a
watershed consultant.
Work formerly had his head
quarters in Medford, but they
were moved to Portland about
three years ago. He is in charge
of snow surveys and water fore
casting for most of the western
United States.
. In a letter received in Med
ford, Work said:
Valiant Siruggl
"One only need travel far from
home, perhaps to areas of the
vital Middle East, to get a con
ception of how fully blessed we
Americans are in our God-given
heritage of natural resources.
Those people in Iraq, through
wise use of their oil resources,
are making a valiant struggle to
recapture some of their water
shed assets, but their problems
are great indeed. We, here, are
in the enviable position, given
the wisdom and will to do so,
to prevent the ravages which
come to watersheds and croo
lands severely used for thous
ands of years.
"My assignment in Iraq was
to develop and initiate a snow
survey system as a basis of run
off forecasting for management
of the two large flood-control
and irrigation reservoirs now
under construction, and for two
additional reservoirs in the plan
ning stage in the Tigris river
and its principal tributaries in
Iraq. Consequently, most of my
time was in the high mountains
of Kurdistan, which tower to
10.000 feet or so and receive
rather heavy snowfalls."
Work was in the Mid-East on
leave from the soil conservation
service as a consultant to a pri
vate American engineering firm,
and went with the consent and
support of the U.S. government, i
