The annual pre-Christmas re
cruiting campaign of Headquar
ters company, 186th infantry reg
iment of the Oregon National
Guard, Mecftord, will start this
week and continue through
Christmas, Capt. S. J. Fagpne,
company commander, has an
nounced. Purpose of the campaign this
year, Fagone said, if for the com
pany to qualify for the Eisen
hower trophy. Headquarters
company has so far this year met
all the qualifications necessary to
win the trophy he said. It Will
be presented at the end of the
year. .
To be eligible for the trophy,
Fagone added, the company must
increase its number of men from
B2 to 99, which is the company's
full compliment. The Eisenhow
er trophy s the highest award, a
guard unit can earn, he said.
Requirements for Trophy
Fagone said that to earn the
t ophy the company must have
had a superior at camp, a supe
rior or excellent during the fed
eral inspection, 90 per cent drill-
attendance, 30 per cent men en
rolled in extension courses, and a
full compliment of men.
Headquarters Company was
selected as the top unit in the
state last July from ratings esta
blished during the summer camp
at Ft. Lewis, Wash., by sixth
Army headquarters in San Fran
cisco. This was the third straight
year the company has received
a superior rating.
An official rating has not yet
been received on the federal in
spection held last month, accord
ing to Fagone. However, he said,
the inspecting officer stated that
"This was the most efficient

Three Boys Arrested
After Chase in Car
Shreveport, La. U.R) Three
small boys armed with rifles be
lieved stolen in Texas were cap
tured in a truck late Friday aft
er an 80-mile-an-hour chase
punctuated by gunfire from the
fugitives.
Sheriff's Deputy A. A. Waller
said he captured the boys, rang
ing from 10 to 14 years old, in
a four-mile chase. Waller said
pot shots from the fleeing truck
narrowly missed his head.
When the truck went into a
ditch on a curve, Waller said,
the boys emerged, one holding
a rifle.
The boys, identified as being
from Dallas, Tex., admitted
stealing the truck in Mesquite,
Tex., and driving it here, Wall
er said. The boys also admitted
stealing the .30 and .22 caliber
rifles, along with costume jewel
ry and other items, he said.
Waller said he discovered
the boys lowering a motor boat
in a city-owned boat house, and
told them to follow him to head
quarters. They dashed away in
another direction and the chase
followed.

Sobs al Trial

Beatrice Weinberger sobbed
Friday when she again heard
the voice of the man accused of
the kidnan-murder of her infant
son ask, "Listen, do you want
to see your kid or don't you?"
A recorded telephone conver
sation between the distraught
mother and the alleged kidnap
er boomed over loudspeakers in
Nassau County court with the
voice of a man demanding $2,
000 ransom for little Peter Weinberger.
District Attorney Frank Gu-
lotta told the jury the voice was
that of Angelo John La Marca.
La Marca, 31, is on trial
charged with abducting Peter
from his parents' home last July
4 and abandoning him to die the
next day. The conversation play
ed back in court occurred July
10.
He sat motionless, staring at
his folded hands, as the metallic
voice recreated his demand for
money for the baby's safe re
turn five days after he had left
Peter to die. Mrs. Weinberger's
sobs mingled with the recorded
voices.
Elderly Hunter Falls
In Abandoned Well
Roanoke Rapids, N.C. U.PJ
An elderly hunter fell into an
abandoned well Friday and
stood so long in chilling waist
deep water he was unable to
lower his upraised arms when
rescued.
The hunter, G. H. Ranhorn, a
merchant in his late 60s, was
hospitalized and under treatment
Saturday for severe shock.
Ranhorn went hunting early
Friday morning in 25-degree
weather and fell into the old
well in a field north of here.

Clandestine Radio
