    MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE SEVEN
Man Blind for 48 Years Sees Wife for First Time
Chicago (U.PJ Ernest Ek
wept when he told how the mir
acle of modern surgery rf
claimed him from a life of semi
darkness and let him see his
wife's face clearly for the first
time.
Ek, 50, Wauwatosa, Wis., had
been semiblind since the age
of 2.
He told his story at a news
conference at Weley Memorial
hospital, where last June a deli
cate corneal transplant opera
tion restored full sight to his
one remaining eye.
Before the operation, he
could perceive only light and
dim shadows. He could count
his fingers only if he held his
hand six inches from his eye.
"It was like looking through
wax paper," he said.
"But now, everything is beau
tiful. Eggs frying in a pan are
really beautiful if you've never
seen them before."
For most of his life the cornea
of his right eye had been scar
red, inflamed and painful, his
medical history showed. At the
age of 6, his left eye- was re
moved. As an adult he worked at the
workshop for the blind in Mil
waukee for a time. Nine years
ago he got a job at a shoe fac
tory. The company trained him
to run a hydraulic last-pulling
machine.
A Lot Easier Now
"I did it mostly by touch," he
said. "It's a lot easier now that
I can see."
A prematurely white-haired
grandfather, Ek now is learn
ing to write. His wife, Hilde
gard, to whom he has been mar
ried 29 years, is teaching him.
"Most things are . beautiful,"
he said. "My wife's face. I had
never really seen it.' And she has
helped he through the years,
never letting me feel I was a
burden."

Fighting Men Declared
Better Off Than Civilians
Tokyo (U.PJ Uncle Sam's
fighting men with their good
salaries and fancy fringe bene
fits, are better off than Uncle
Sam's civilians, according to
what you heat on the Army
radio or read in the Army
tpaper here".
Thos who join .up and stay
in, -can count on good pay,
bonuses, promotions, exciting
work, housing, medical bene
fits plus a lot of other nice
3 things and job security not to
bp found elsewhere, the Army
says.
Furthermore, a promise made
by the Army is kept and this
can not always be said about of
a fers and promises made by pri
s vate industry. At least that is
what the troops here are told.
A series of four articles on
why it is advantageous to be a
member of, the armed forces
'fattier than a civilian has just
e been published in Pacific Stars
end Stripes.
Attention as called to an en
listed man serving with an anti

taking a job in private industry.
Big Re-enlistment Bonus
o , A bit of investigating, how
ever, showed him what he could
s get by staying in the service.
With five years 'of service be
c hind him, he would be eligible
for a six-year enlistment bonus
(Of $1,090.80. He also could be
assigned to the metropolitan
area of his choice. !
, He also could get more educa
tion at a special school and be
In line for further promotions
and pay. increases.
The American serviceman
9 gets air this because of the mili
Brj career incentive program
drawn, up by the Department of
3 Defense to match military op
portunities .with opportunities
on the "outside."
Its features provide for a re
enlistrrient bonus, a firm system
of rank and pay, medical care
and fipaocial assistance, for de
pendents and survivors, plus
ether benefits.
Tha serviceman ia fed, housed
and clothed. He can buy at be
low commercial prices at the
post exchange and commissary.
There is guaranteed retirement
pay.
Surrey Results
Stars and Stripes called at
tention to a survey made earlier
this year by the U.S. Air Force
which covered ex-servicemen
who left the military to take
what they expected would be
high-paying civilian jobs. Most
planned to cash in on the skills
they had learned in the service.
( The poll revealed that only
20 per cent of 3,000 ex-airmen
got jobs based on what they had
learned in the service. And for
these, the average beginning
wage was $60 a week and the
average current wage was $73
a week. Stars and Stripes said
this was "less than Air Force
salaries and benefits for the
same skills."
More benefits are being added
all the time. Pay boosts ranging
from six to 25 per cent came
through for the regulars in 1955.
Survivor benefits are up. Effec
tive next Jan. 1, all active duty
personnel become eligible for
Social Security benefits, too.
It's not just the enlisted man
who enjoys all this superior life
in the services. The officers have
it good, too, and that includes
extra pay as much as $100 per
month for some doctors and
dentists.
Ohio Community Shows
All Shakespeare Plays
Yellow Springs, O. (U.PJ
This community of 3.000 reach
ed .a goal with the opening of
the production of "Hamlet" by
the Antioch Shakespeare Festi
val. It became the first American
community ever to have experi
enced presentation of all known
plays by Shakespeare.
And the record of producing
the entire Shakespeare canon in
a five-year period has been
equalled by only one other
theatrical group in the English
speaking world, London's Old
Vic Theater.
