Shows Increase
On Oregon Routes

creases on most major routes
during the first 10 months of the
years as compared to the same
period a year ago, the State High
way Department has reported.
The increase was measured by
gasoline consumption and auto
matic traffic counters.
Gasoline consumption was up
between 4.4 and 7.7 per cent
over last year and recorders
showed three per cent more
vehicles.
Roule 99 Gains Shown
While slight 10-months de
clines were recorded at some
points, steady gains showed up
in vehicle volumes on U. S. 30;
U. S. 26; U. S. 99 and U. S. 101.
On U. S. 101 south of Ocean
lake and on U S. 97 in central
Oregon there was 10 per cent
gain while U. S. 99 traffic south
of Eugene was up about nine per
cent.
Slackening of const ruction
operations on The Dalles dam
cut down the percentage of gain
on U. S. 30 west of The Dalles,
the vehicle count showed nine
and 12 per cent gains at Pendle
ton and Huntington.

facts about fat people include
the reassuring one that not all
are "psychiatric problems." Just
give many of them good reasons
for losing weight and reassure
them now and then, and they
stick to a 1200-calorie-a-day diet
indefinitely.
This comes from Dr. George
M. Jones of the University of
Texas Medical School in Dallas.
Since fat people and their doctors
are being assailed by all sorts of
trick diets and drugs and devices
for weight reduction, he put the
medical facts together into one
easy lesson.
These medical facts, he said
in the technical journal, "Post
graduate Medicine," deny that
it is normal for people to get fat
as they get older; that some fat
people are fat merely because
their bodies utilize their food
more efficiently; that glandular
secretions have anything to do
with people being fat.
Too Much Eating
"Under all circumstances," he
continued, the cause of obesity
is taking in more calories in food
than are put out in physical act
ivities. Obese people lose weight,
therefore, when they either de-

Increasing physical activity -is
not always a good idea for health
reasons. Anyway "for the avar
age person a walk of one mile at
the rate of , two miles an hour
leads to an expenditure of 100
extra calories," Dr.- Jones said.
"Therefore, to lose twe pounds
of adipose tissue by this method
an average person would have to
walk 10 extra miles each day for
a week without increashig his
food intake. This makes , in-'
creased physical activity a high
ly improbable method of weight
reduction."
He found passive physical ef
forts in which machine exercise
the body, massage, and "rolling
and padding devices" no good.
So the only remaining provable
way to lose weight was to eat
fewer calories than th.e body ex
pends in its normal physical act
ivities. With many fat people,
all a doctor: has to do is prove
to them that leanness is a. profit
able idea.
Threat To Life
"Most people are unaware of
the threat to life .that obesity en
tails, and they can scarcely b
expected lo take such a condi
tion seriously until fhey acquire
the information" he said. He
cited the statistics overweight
people, statistically, have a short
er life-span than lean people,
and they are more subject to
certain diseases.
"Other patients, it is true,
seem to have a compulsion to
eat, which makes simple low
calorie diet instructions ,inade.
quale." he added. "It is certainly
true that some obese patients re
quire more intensive psychotherapy."
