Many people wonder why
they have a coated tongue, and
some of them worry about it.
In my father's
day, the first
thing a physi
cian did when
he came to
see a patient
was to look at
his tongue.
This behavior
was a relic of
some old prac-

90th annual convention of the
National Grange yesterday.
Penalities ranging up to life
prisonment for peddlers of
licit drugs, and taxes on the
liquor industry to finance the
care and cure of alcoholics were
among proposals made.
The National Grange also
taken at all levels of government
to curtail, prohibit and outlaw
"foul" publications.

between rural people and the
medical profession through co
operation of several allied or

tongue ever helped a doctor
much in making a diagnosis; and
hence, as years passed, physi
cians quit looking at the tongue,
and lost interest in seeing wheth
er or not it had a coat on it.
Probably anyone who has a fev
er and is decidedly ill has a
somewhat coated tongue.
Years ago, I made some ex
periments which confirmed an
old' idea that much of the coat
on the tongue has come up dur
ing the night with bits of food
regurgitated from the stomach.
What I did was to give a woman
some capsules containing the
easily recognizable yellow spores
of the drug lycopodium. In the
morning the .coat on her tongue
was yellow, rand a microscopic
study showed it was full of the
lycopodium.
In Japan the people scrape
some of the coat off their
tongue with a little silver hoe,
or they bend a thin place in the
bamboo handle of their tooth
brush so as to make a loop with
which to scrape the top of the
tongue. In this country some
'persons take a wash rag on the
end of the index finger and
scrub the top of their tongue.
Many persons worry about a
so-called geographic tongue in
which there are white lines sug
gesting the outlines of a map. I
doubt if this pecularity indicated
anything harmful.

roof of the County Conservation
Club president's home and perch
ed there in bedraggled im
mobility for 18 hours had bird
lovers in a tizzy.

man called in the Audubon Soc
iety ' people who arrived with
flashlights and bonoculars and
began rummaging through bird
books for a record of a black
pigeon. They played a flashlight
on the bird which merely turned
its head away from the beam
without shifting a foot.
The mystery was cleared up
next day. It was merely an or
dinary pigeon tarred and, of
course, feathered. The tar had
matted the wings.

Planes Designed

the nation's most famous types
of planes were designed in a
railroad car and two hotel
rooms.
Harold Mansfield, author of a
new book on aviation, "Vision,"
reveals that the B-52, our top
global jet bomber, was designed
in a hotel room in Dayton, Ohio,
on a Saturday night by five
aeronautical experts.
They found a hardware store
open, bought glue, plywood and
carving tools and built a scale
model that day. The next day
they dictated a 32-page memo
to a public stenographer outlin
ing their thoughts.
The PW-9, the leading fighter
plane of its day, was sketched
out by Claire Egtvedt, aeronau
tical engineer, while traveling
in a Pullman car on his way
home from Washington.
The Monomail, the first
smooth-metal transport plane,
was 'pioneered by Edward Hub
band and Claire Egtvedt. They
were in a Los Angeles hotel
room during the 1928 air races
and sketched their ideas on hotel
stationery.
On a visit to England, Francis
Cabot Lowell, a young Boston
merchant, memorized details of
a power loom and reproduced it,
thus establishing the American
cotton manufacturing industry
in 1814.
