Calling All Males! We're Losing Sex
War To Secretly. Calculating Females
Br H. D. QUIGG
United Presi Correspondent '
New York (U P Males of
America, awake' If that's pos
sible. We're losing the sex war:
We're becoming the im.derdogs
of American civilization.
The bat'ie of men against
women his erupted out of the
cold war stage. A flood of hot
fiffures from the Census Bureau
shows how the females of this
country have built . up their
dread forces secretly and calcu
latingly since 1310.
And v have gone along,
blithely, complacently, living our
smug little lives, ignoring the
voices of warning, until sud
denly mriff dramatically, they
have struck. The awful truth is
this:
Th? Census Bureau says there
are now 1.381.000 more women
than men in this countrv. Their
build up began ip 1910, when
there were 106 men for every
100 women. Steadily they aue
mcnted their forces, increased
their stockpiles until, in 1940,
there were only 100.7 men for
every 100 women.
Fiaht Back
In 1950. they spumed and
passed us by 600.000. It sermed
like a trivial figure and there
were those who laughed lightly
and avowed that a good cigar's
a smoke. Well, all that's behind
lis now. and our work is cut out.
We must fight back.
A sex that can outstrip us by , show the gravity, the enormity.
1 13 million in six years is of the threat. And look at other
monstrous crafty. You know iieias. omen own a monopoly
what they're after? Guys and j on style. They admittedly sing
dols. That's dols.. with one "L
Stands for $.
The female army has debouch
ed upon the financial plain. In
1952. there were 3.230.000 wom
en shareholders of stock in pub
lic corporations for 49.8 per
cent of the total. The latest New
York Stock Exchange census
shows they've won: right now
there are 4.455,000 female share
holders 51.6 per cent of the
shareholder total.
And who do you think are the
largest single occupation-group
of stockholders? Housewives.
34 2 per cent.
There have been all kinds of
estimates that women own more
of the wealth of the United
States than men. Most financial
experts say any percentage
would be a guess. But one put
it this way:
Only One Means
"It depends on what you
mean by 'own.' If you use the
word in the sense of own-and-control,
then it's women by 100
per cent."
What did he mean?
"Why, if you're married, your
wife controls all your wealth, in
the practical sense. I'm a mar
ried man with three kids, and I
know who controls my assets."
It's rays of light like that that

And they carry more weight.
Proportionately, that is on
their bones. But maybe that's
only a biased male viewpoint.
Take the wealth factor, the
vote factor. What you got before
long? A woman president. Then,
let's face it America a matri;
archy. Let us. then, steel our
selves to a positive program. 1.
Stop dying off so fast; pamper
your heart. 2. Grasp the wealth.
3 Repeat daily: "I'm alive. I'm

Mrs. Stanley Smith, PTA

Mrs. Maxine Perryman, sang
"School Days."
Wally West, eighth grade stu
dent, was master of ceremonies
for several pantomine skits
which Mrs. Elbert Hefley direct
ed to show the contrast between
the old days and new modern
methods of education. The skits
compared old-time transporta
tion with modem busses, old
time classrooms and teachers
with modern classes, the days of
cold lunches with the new cafe
teria system. Extra-curricular
activities were depicted by
music of the past and modern
band instruction, and the ad
vancement in athletics was
shown by contrasting non-supervised
sports and the new athletic
program under qualified instruc
tors. Mrs. Berryman led the au

was accompanied by Mrs. Ray

Klamath Compact
To Legislatures
Klamath Falls, Ore. U.P.)
Representatives of Oregon and
California signed the Klamath
River Basin Compact Saturday
and sent it to the legislatures
of the two states for ratification.
The compact, designed to pro
mote development and proper
use of water resources in the
Upper Klamath Basin, also needs
approval of Congress before it
becomes effective.
The compact, which sets up
a system of priority for water
use, covers all land draining into
the Klamath River above the
point where it crosses the Cali
fornia-Oregon border near Coco
Lake in Siskiyou County, Calif,
Less than two million acre
feet of water about 15 per
cent of the entire runoff of the
Klamath is affected by the
compact.
Domestic water users are giv
en first priority under the con
tract, followed by irrigation, rec
reation, including fish and wild
life, industrial, hydroelectric and
other uses.
Export of water from the up
per basin is prohibited with one
exception, in Oregon, but the
compact provides for diversion
between the two states within
limits of the basin boundaries.
