Veterans Day Subject
Of Chamber Meeting
Eugene Orr, Oregon represen
tative of the American Legion's
national executive committee on
rehabilitation, and past comman
der of the legion's post 15, Med
ford, discussed Veterans Day at
the noon luncheon of the Jack
son County Chamber of Com
merce yesterday.
The government proclaimed
Veterans Day a legal holiday,
Orr said, when they combined
Armistice Day and Army and
Navy Day into one holiday.
There are more than 22,000,
000 veterans in the United
States today, he said. There are
3,000,000 veterans from WWI,
15,000.000 from WWII and 3,
000,000 from the Korean war.
- The purpose of veteran's or
ganizations, he said, is to help
disabled veterans. The largest of
these groups, according to Orr,
is the American Legion, with
3,000.000 members. The veter
an's groups also have child
guidance programs, he added.
The local Legion Post, Orr
said, last year sent 28 high
school boys from Medford to
Boys State at Corvallis for an
"indoctrination of government."
Local Legion posts also form
State Guards, he pointed out,
whenever National Guard units
are activated.
Community projects of the lo
cal legion post, Orr said, include
the disaster car and volunteer
fire fighting teams.
