Democrats Analyze Election Returns
To See What Happened To 'Farm Revolt'
Washington U.P What hap
pened to the "farm revolt"
which Democrats banked on to
beat President Eisenhower's sec-ona-term
bid?
An analysis of the returns In
dicates that farmer discontent
caused the President to get fewer
votes in the farm belt than in
1952. but. deflate the losses, he
still swept every farm state "ex
cept Missouri.
Where th farmers turned
most decidedly against the Re
publicans was in congressional
and gubernatorial races.
Everybody Happy
In Marital Trade
Bellflower. Calif. (U.R)
Two plastic company officials
who switched wives today were
back at work in adjoining offices
confident that their marital ex
change vas the best for everyone
concerned.
Paul H. Omohundro. 41. presi
dent of thea plastics firm, and
Glenn Capps, 40, company' sec
retary, said that they and their
wives had planned for three
years to change mates.
Omohundro's former wife. Ra
chel, and Capps" ex-mate, Mabel,
obtained divorces Monday in Las
egas, and married each other's
husbands shortly afterward.
Both wives were given cus
tody of their children. Omohun
dro and his first wife have two
children, Bonnie Ruth, 13, and
Thomas Ward, 11. Capps and his
former mate- have a daughter.
Andrea. 13. and a ' son, Albert
Glenn Jr., 8.
Omohundro said that the chil
dren had plenty of time to get
used to the idea of switching
households. He said that now
the children would have the run
of both homes. .
A GOP official said in some
areas Republicans "apparently
lost up to 40 per cent of our
1952 farm vote." Losses were
heaviest west of the Mississippi,
in areas where farmers have suf
fered from drought, he said.
In the nation as a whole. Mr.
Eisenhower won nearly 58 per
cent of the vote compared to 55
per cent in 1952.
The Picture
.But in farm areas, this was
the picture:
Nebraska: Elsenhower 65 per
cent, down four per cent from
1952.
South Dakota: Eisenhower 58
per cent, down nine per cent.
Minnesota: Eisenhower 54 per
i cent, down two per cent.
Illinois: Eisenhower 60 per
cent, up five per cent. Much of
this sain apparently came in
the Chicago area.
Missouri: Eisenhower 49 per
cent, down two per cent.
Iowa: Eisenhower 59 per cent,
down five per cent.
Kansas:. Eisenhower 66 per
cent, down three per cent.
Democrats elected governors
in the normally Republican farm
slates of Iowa and Kansas. And
Democratic spokesmen claimed

Madison, Wis. UK The Wis

the aid of a woman who was

Mrs. Nola . Pugh called the

Marshall Field III
Dies in Hospital
New York (U.R) Marshall
Field III, banker, publisher and
philanthropist, died today in
New York hospital where he re
cently underwent brain surgery.
Field, founder of the Chicago
Sun, which later became the
Chicago Sun-Times, entered the
hospital Oct. 21. A brief, an
nouncement today said the mul
timillionaire died at 2 a.m.
XPST).
Field was born in Chicago in
September. 1893. Both his father
and grandfather, the famed mer
chant prince Marshall Field I,
died while he was still a child.
He was left a fortune estimat
ed at S120 million.
Field entered the newspaper
business in 1940 when he invest
ed $200,000 to help found the
paper, PM, in New York. The
paper didn't catch on and Field
sold it.
In 1941 he founded the Chi
cago Sun, three days before
Pearl Harbor. Six years later
he bought control of the Times
and merged the papers into the
Chicago Sun-Times.

the farm issue helped turn Re
publicans out of at least six
House seats and two Senate seats.
Still Hop
The Democrats hoped to pick
up two additional GOP farm belt
seats in undecided races between
Rep. Robert D. Harrison (Neb.)
and Lawrence Brock and Rep.
James I. Dolliver (Ia.) and Mer
win Coad. They also gave the
farm problem credit for their
near-upset of Sen. Francis Case
(R-S.D.)
Brock and Coad campaigned
for a return to the old Demo
cratic program of high, rigid
farm supports. Dolliver has
taken the same stand, but Harri
son who had expected to win
easily backed the administra
tion farm program.
GOP Viw
A GOP farm spokesman saw
the results this way:
"Our farm vote over the count
try was near the normal Repub
lican farm vote. We lost a lot of
the Democrats and independents
we got in '52.
"Price support wasn't so much
of an issue. It was the drought.
This election proves you can't
make anybody happy with a
drought relief program."
Republican farm leaders could
draw some comfort from the re
election of several staunch ad
ministration farm supporters, in
cluding Sens. Homer E. Cape
hart (R-Ind.), Everett M. Dirk
sen (R-Ill.) and Bourke B. Hick-
enlooper (R-la.)
Democratic sources said the
new Democrat-controlled Con
gress probably will try to restore
high, rigid farm price supports
if the administration tries to cut
1957 supports below 1956 levels.
Trailer House Hauls
Forty-one Passengers
Enid, Okla.-UR) When Air
Force Sgt. Val. Weigel tows his
trailer house down the road, he
has 41 "passeng'ers."
Besides Mrs. Weigel, the
trailer is the home of 40 dolls.
The collection incudes at least
one pair from Saigon, Indochina,
Bangkok, Thailand and Ran
goon, Burma. They range in
height from eight to 12 inches
and all wear native costume.
The Weigels started collecting
dulls in 1951 when the sergeant
was stationed in Singapore. Most
of the dolls are from Asiatic
countries, but now they are con
centrating on European speci
mens. They hope someday to have a
Stevenson Rests !
At Libertyville Farm
Chicago (U.R) Adlai E.
Stevenson rested at his nearby
Libertyville, 111., farm today and
pondered his future course in
public affairs.
The defeated Democratic pres
idential candidate held a post
mortem huddle Wednesday with
top advisers, most of whom told
him the Middle East crisis pro
vided the impetus for President
Eisenhower's landslide victory.
Clayton Fritchey. Stevenson's
chief press aide, said the beaten
candidate probably would re
lease by the end of the week a
statement on his future plans.
The former Illinois governor
early Wednesday conceded de
feat to President Eisenhower for
the second time in four years
and called on all Americans to
give the administration all re-
glass display case, but for now
the dolls are kept in a teakwood
chest from Singapore.
New Jersey Governor
Engaged To Marry
Oberlin, Ohio (U.R) The
President of Oberlin college an
nounced today the engagement
of his daughter, Helen Stevenson
to Gov. Robert B. Meyner of
New Jersey.
Dr. William E. Stevenson did
not reveal the exact date of the
wedding but he said it would
take place sometime in January,
probably in Oberlin.
Meyner, 48, and Miss Steven
son were expected to tell about
their betrothal at a news con
ference at the state house m
Trenton, N.Y., today.
The handsome governor, con
sidered one of the nation's most
eligible bachelors, met Miss
Stevenson when he spoke at a
mock political convention at Ob
erlin college last May 4.
Miss Stevenson. 28, is a dis
tant cousin of defeated Demo-
sponsible support in the troubled
times ahead."
