Johnson Scheduled
To Speak at 50C
Ashland Paul B. Johnson,
former director of the Ameri
can Friends Service committee's
village development project in
rural Jordan, will speak Friday,
Nov. 9, at 11 a.m. in the South
ern Oregon college library, and
at 1:00 p.m. in Churchill hall
auditorium. The public has been
invited to attend the latter sps-
sion, Dr. Arthur Taylor, chair
man of the social science divis
ion which is sponsoring the ap
pearance, announced.
Johnson recently returned to
tne west Coast after havins
spent three years in Jordan. Al
though its activities were pri
marily agricultural in nature,
the program upon which he was
working reached manv nhases
of village life, including health,
and sanitation, water use, com
munications, and rural credit.

it gradually sloughs off the tail,
acquires legs and lungs of the
adult. And in the process, frus
trates its many would-be ene
mies. With the common midwife
toad of Europe the male takes
over the newly laid eggs. In
stead Of resortinff tn the walor
the male calls the mute female
from an entrance to a hole in
the ground which he mav have
made. After she has expelled
two strings of eggs, the male
fertilizes them and then thrusts
in one leg and then the other
through the mass of eggs much
like stepping into a pair of
trousers entwining the gooey
mess aoout ins rear legs. Then,
while the female hops blithely
off, the solicitous male takes
his precious though cumbersome
cargo to his burrow. In the fol
lowing nights, from time to
time, he emerges to feed with
the eggs still wrapped around
his shanks. This foraging is im
portant because the eggs absorb
dew from plants. Aftpr three
weeks, the male carries his
precious load to some pool or
stream. When the eggs are
dipped into the water, the larva
burst the soft coverings anH (aln
up life, to become adults . . .
