Handbook For Expectant Falheri
A book by Willian H. Genne.
on the problems of expectant
fathers, is delightful and can
be very help
ful. It tells the
husband of a
pregnant w o-1
man what to j
expect, w h a 1 1
to do, what not
to do. and how
t o understand j
things so as to

happy one one that brings the
two people closer together. The
author speaks with knowledge
and authority because, for years,
he has been a teacher-counsellor
under the Clara Elizabeth Fund
lor Maternal Health, in Flint,
Mich. He writes well and with
great sympathy and understand
ing. As he says, the husband exerts
the most important single in
fluence on his pregnant wife,
and hence it is very important
that he adjust well to her prob
lems. Many a man is upset and
even aggrieved when his wife
becomes pregnant; he may be a
bit selfish and hence in no mood
to accept a newcomer who will
take much of his wife's attention.
Perhaps because he had an un
happy childhood he does not like
the idea of having a child, or
he worries about the expense of
rearing one; or he dislikes the
idea of his wife's body becom
ing even temporarily stretched
out of shape; or he may have
some guilt feeling about having
helped to make her so nauseated
and uncomfortable.
Testing Ground for Marriage
Pregnancy is often a testing
ground for a marriage: it can
show how well a husband and
wife can learn to cooperate and
live together. It will be good
for them if it helps to strengthen
and deepen their love for each
other; and if it makeSj their love
more tender. Genne advises the
husband to go with his wife for
the first visit to the doctor.
The book tells the prospective
father the many things that he
will want to know about preg
nancy, the growth of the baby,
morning sickness, and other
troubles. It tells about going to
the hospital and about the wife's
labor. The kindly husband will
help his wife during her preg
nancy. He will go out for a walk
with her every evening. He will
learn how to help when the baby
comes home, and how he should
react if he wanted a boy and gets
a girl.
Must Remain Lovers
Very wisely, Genne tells the
husband and wife that they must
try to stay much in love: they
must remain lovers, and they
must not give up any part of
their love to the child. Too many
persons do that. Many a new
mother even leaves her husband
and moves into the nursery with
her son.
A few hundred times I have
seen a woman who greatly re
gretted this some 30 years later
when, after the departure of the
last of her children, she turned
to her long-neglected husband
and found that he was hopelessly
estranged from her. She found
that to him she was largely a
stranger, who by her advances
only made him uncomfortable.
