ence to know that your labors -your
efforts of four years have
achieved that level where they
are approved by the United
States of America in a vote.
Such a vote as that cannot be
merely for an individual. It is
for principles and ideals for
which ihat individual and his
associates, have stood and have
tried to exemplify.

United States who have under
stood what the administration
the Republican party has been
trying to do in these past four
years, and consequently have
worked so hard for the reelec
tion of that administration, my
most grateful thanks.
The only thing I can say to
all the people all the Ameri
cans who have voted that ticket
which puts us back into the
same positions of responsibility
I can only say, it is our earn
est prayer that nothing we can
ever do or shall ever do will
betray that trust.
And now let me say something
that looks to the future! I think
that modern Republicanism has
now proved itself. And America
has approved of modern Republi
canism. And so, as we look ahead as
we look ahead to the problems
in front, let us remember that
a political party deserves the
approbation of America only as
it represents-he ideals, the as
pirations and the hopes of Amer
icans. If that is anything less, it
is merely a conspiracy to seize
power. And the Republican
party is not that!
Looks To The Future
Modern Republicanism looks
to the future. Which means it
looks to that era in that time
in which our young axe most
interested. And this means it
will gain constantly new recruits
from the youngest of our voters.
And as such, as long as it re
mains true to the ideals and the
aspirations of America, it will
continue to increase in power
and influence for decades to
come. It will point the way to
peace among nations, and to
prosperity advancing stand
ards here at home in which
everybody will share, regardless
of any accident of power, of sta
tion, of race, religion, or color.
And if we cling to- these ideals,
if we uphold them, if we fight
for them, then I say: Republi
cans deserve then, the vote of
confidence that Republicans,
friendly Democrats and inde
pendents, have given us this
day.
My friends, I conclude with a
pledge:" With whatever talents
the good God has given me, with
whatever strength there, is with
in me, I will continue and so
will my associates to do just
one thing: to work for 168 mil
lion Americans here at home
and for peace in the world.

telegram to President Eisen
hower: "You have won not only the
election, but also an expression
of the great confidence of the
American people. I send you my
warm congratulations.
Tonight we are not Republi
cans and Democrats, but Ameri
cans. We appreciate the grave diffi
c u 1 1 i e s your administration
faces, and, as Americans, join in
wishing you all success in the
years that lie ahead."
Word To Supporters
And now let me say a word to
you, my supporters and friends,
all over the country.
First, I want to express my
respect and thanks to a gallant
partner in this great adven
ture Estes Kefauver.
I wish there was some way I
could properly thank you, one
by one. I wish there was some
way I could make you feel my
gratitude for the support, the
encouragement, the confidence
that has sustained me through
these weeks and months and
years that I have been privileged
to be your leader.
Thanks' to many of you, I have
twice had the proud experience
of being selected by the Demo
cratic party as its nominee for
the most exalted office on earth.
Once again I have tried hard to
express my views and make
clear my party's hopes for our
beloved country. To you who are
disappointed tonight, let me con-
fes that I am too. But we must i
not be downhearted, for 'There
is radiance and glory in the
darkness, could we but see, and
to see we have only to look.'
People Made Choice
For here, in America, the peo
ple have made their choice in a
vigorous partisan contest that
has affirmed again the vitality
of the Democratic process. And,
I say God bles partisanship, for
this is Democracy's life blood.
Bear in mind that beyond the
seas, in much of the world, in
Russia, in China, in Hungary, in
all the trembling satellites, par
tisan controversy is forbidden
and dissent suppressed.
So I say to you, all of you
everywhere, my dear and loyal
friends, take heart there are
things more precious than politi
cal victory; there is the right to
political contest. And who knows
better how vigorous and alive it
is than you who bear the fresh,
painful wounds of battle.
Let me add another thought
for you who traveled with me
on this great journey:
I have tried to chart the road
to a new and better America. 1
want to say to all of you who
have followed me that I am su
premely confident that our cause
will ultimately prevail, for
American can only go forward.
It cannot go backward or stand
still.
Can't Draw Back
But even more urgent is the
hope that our leaders will recog
nize that America wants to face
up squarely to the facts of to
day's world. We don't want to
draw back from them. We can't.
We are ready for the test that
we know history has set for us.

spear of Democracy. And let us
giye the administration all re
sponsible support in the troubled
times ahead.

prayer that we will meet often
again in the liberals' everlasting
battle against ignorance, pover
ty, misery and war.
Be of good cheer. And remem
ber, my dear friends, what a
wise man said 'A merry heart

broken spirit dryeth the bones.'

lost an election, I won a grand
child.

Accepts Morse's
Challenged Vote
Eugene U.R) An elec
tion board yesterday, after due
consideration, accepted the chal
lenged vote of Sen. Wayne
Morse .
The right of the Democratic
senator to cast his vote in the
election was challenged by
Woodrow Smith, Hood River
service station operator who
made an unsuccessful attempt
to win the Democratic ' party
nomination from Morse in the
May primary.
Smith maintained a six hour
vigil outside the voting place
yesterday until the senator
showed up to cast his ballot at
2 p.m.
Oath Administered
Mrs. Pearl Pallette, an elec
tion judge, listened to the chal
lenge and administered the elec
tion oath to Morse as required by
law. After the challenge was is
sued, the board considered the
challenge and decided that the
documents submitted by Smith
in his contention that Morse was
a Republican rather than a Dem
ocrat only proved that the sen.
tor had changed his party regis
tration.
The events took place in the
crowded kitchen of the M. J.
Gleason home; the voting loca
tion tor Friendly precinct.
Smith explained as he made
his challenge that "he didn't
have it in for Morse he mere
ly doubted that he was a Demo
crat." Smith had earlier made
several unsuccessful legal at
tempts to establish this as a
fact.

Former Prison Inmate
Retains Congress Seat
Lawrence, Mass. (U.R! Rep.
Thomas J. Lane (D-Mass.), today
became' the first person in U.S.
political history to retain a con
gressional seat after serving a
prison term.
Lane, 58, began campaigning
for reelection only two weeks
after he was released from a fed
eral prison where he served four
months for income tax evasion.
The congressman was convict
ed of evading $38,000 in federal
income tax over a three - year
period from 1949 to 1951.
Christmas Trees
Banned in Mexico
Mexico City (U.R) There
will be no Christmas trees in
Mexico this year. .
The Ministry of Agriculture
banned the cutting and importa
tion of trees for the Christmas
holidays. Officials said the move
was aimed at the conservation
of Mexico's forest exchange
needed for essential imports.
