Despite the awesome destruc
tive power of SAC s nuclear and
ihwmonuclear bombs, the crews
are drilled over and over on
.pinpoint bombing from altitudes
of 50.000 feet and hichcr. SAC
hs no intention of unleashing
its weapons in a scattershot
manner. "
"The bullseye may not only be
he railroad yard, b'lt a certain
roundhouse in the railroad
yard." is thp SAC officer's way
of rutting it.
"We feel this way," he ex
Dlaljied. "If we are trying to
wipe out a military tarpet at
Ihe edge of the city, we try to
hit the target. A lot of people
are going to get hurt. We know
we could miss the bullseye and
still do the job. But if we drop
on the target, fewer civilians
will be hurt than if we dicl a
sloppy job and got the target
from the opposite side of the
city." .-
Mock Targets
The B52s practice their pin
point bombing nightly, using
U. S. cities as their mock targets.
"A lot of people don't realize
n," the officer said, "but every
major city in the country has
been thoretically wiped off the
face of the earth hundreds of
times by the B52s.
SAC uses an electronic gim
mick to chrck up on its ac
curacy. The way it works 0 is-that:
When the plane, moving toward
the target' city in the tipper
stratosphere, releases its imagin
ary bmb, it simultaneously
sends out a radio tone. A ground
unit in the city receives this tone.
Knowing. the plane's position..di
rection and speed, plus such
variable as wind direction and
trajectoryr it can .figure nvithin
a matter of feet where the bomb
would have struck. o
If the bombardier, peering in
to his radar sight, presses the
release a couple of seconds too
soon "or too late, the bomb would
miss the city completely.
There aren't too many misses.
SACs elite crews are good
and they can deliver the goods.
