Ergotamine. Rolieytr
of Sick Headache!
A fine woman, whose life re
cently has been made over by
the use of ergotamine, a drug
which stops
terrible sick
h e a d a c h es,
asks me 'why
so many phy
sicians will not
permit their
patients to use
it . I have to
answer that
that is one of
Alvarez the medical
puzzles of today. For some 35
years I have been prescribing
ergotamine widely for the relief
of migraine, and never have I
seen it do any serious harm. In
only half a dozen cases did it
cause enough spasm in the
blood vessels of the person's
legs so that I had to ask him (or
her) to stop its use. I have a
number of patients who have
been taking injections of ergota
mine at least once a day every
day for 10 years and longer, and
as yet they haven t gotten into
any trouble.
What confused physicians was
the report of three cases in
which the ergotamine did harm
after it had been given in large
doses several times a day for the
relief of the terrible itching that
comes with the jaundice of can
cer of the liver. It must be re
membered that the giving of a
drug four or five times a day to
a weakened man who is dying,
is one thing, while the giving
of a dose, perhaps twice a week,
to a healthy young woman is
another.
There is another thing that
few of us physicians know and
that is that di-hydro-ergotamine,
or DHE 45, when it relieves an
attack of sick headache, can be
taken without any fear its ac
tion is so mild that, so far as I
can learn, it has never done any
one any harm.
Carelessness of Health
The other day I happened to
meet an intelligent elderly man
with a cancer growing near and
toward his left eye. When I asked
him if he knew what he had, he
said", "Yes." For a year he had
been fairly certain what it was.
When I asked why he just sat
and watched it grow, he said he
feared its removal might hurt a
bit! When I told him that it
could be removed painlessly aft
er the injection under it of a lit
tle procaine, he said he did not
like the idea of the prick of the
needle! As I often say in this
column, aren't some of us human
beings funny? Here was .a man
threatened with the loss of his
eye and his life, and he was do
ing nothing!
Drugs That Affect the Brain
Of late, the new type of psy
chiatrist who is studying what
actually goes on in the brain is
much interested in testing rare
drugs that excite or depress the
brain, or will produce temporary
insanity. Recently, Dr. Howard
D. Fabing, of Cincinnati, report
ed that a drug called butotenine,
extracted from a mushroom, will
produce mental disturbances.
Legend has it that 1,000 years
ago, Viking warriors ate mush
rooms before a battle in order
to work themselves up into a
frenzy.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers
will understand that it would be
impossible for him to answer re
quests for information or to at
tempt to diagnose by mail.
