Grant County Area
Searched for Airplane
Baker (U.P) A small search
was still under way in the south
ern Grant county area near
Seneca today but most sources
discounted reports that a plane
had gone down in the area yes
terday. Officials of the Ground Ob
server Corps and the Air Force
radar station at Burns said there
apparently had been a low-flying
plane in the area yesterday
but indications were that it had
made its way on and there had
been no crash.
Employees of the Hines Lum
ber Company at Seneca had re
ported seeing the plane and some
believed it crashed.

New Study Proposed
For Bridge at Astoria
Olympia U.R) A new study
to determine the financial feasi
bility of the proposed Astoria
bridge was recommended yester
day by Washington and Oregon
Highways department officials.
At a conference here the offi
cials said that if the span should
not be feasible at the Astoria
site, a study should be made to
determine whether it can be fi
nanced at another site farther
upstream.
As now proposed, the bridge
would be built across the Colum
bia river between Astoria, Ore.,
and Megler, Wash.
A feasibility study released in
March, 1955, showed that traffic
would not be sufficient to raise

Finish for Houses With
Cedar, Redwood Developed
Madison, Wis. (U.PJ A
chemist at the U. S. Forest
products Laboratory here has
developed a finish for houses
with red cedar and redwood
siding.
D. F. Laughman, chemist In
charge of ihe U. S. Forest Serv
ice's laboratory research in
r tinting and finishing, said:
"We have studied natural fin
ishes for more than 10 years.
Practically all such finishes
available to house owners are so
short-lived that they must be
renewed each year, or at the
best every other year.
Response To Demand
"The laboratory finish was
developed in response to a
mounting demand from house
owners for a more durable and
lfliable natural finish. Test re
sults so far indicate that the
lorest Products Laboratory's
natural finish should last four
years or more the average life

parts of the United States."
The formula for a five-gallon
batch of cedar-colored natural

How To Prepare
For ligb redwood use 1 13 ,
pints of burnt sienna and two-1

For dark redwood, use one-half j

law umber plus cne pint of pure
jed iron oxide color-in-oil. By,
varying the amounts of the
burnt sienna and raw umber
colors-in-oil other shades can be
developed.
To prepare the finish, pour
the gallon of mineral spirits
into a container. Put the par
affin and zinc stearate in a pan
and heat over a flame, stir until
a uniform mixture results Pour
the mixture into the mineral
spirits, stirring vigorously while
it is being added, but there must
not be an open flame in the room
at the time.
Follow With Linseed Oil
When Ihe mineral spirits so
lution has cooled to room tern
lerature, add the half gallon
of pentachlorophenol concen
rate and follow with the lin
seed oil. Then stir in the colors-in-oil,
a little at a time, until
the mixture is uniform. It is
then ready for use.
One cost should be applied
to smooth new wood. A gallon
will cover 400 to 500 square
feet. Two applications are rec
