10-MinuU Ovation
For the first two acts of Bel
lini's grueling opera "Norma"
the statuesquely beautiful prima
donna of La Scala of Milan man
aged to elicit only polite ap
plause from her audience. Then,
after a technically thrilling third
act duet with contralto Fedora
Barbieri, she shared a 10-minute
ovation studded with coveted
shouts of "bravissima."
As Mme. Callas took repeated
curtain calls with Miss Barbieri,
she won the hearts of Met fans
by bestowing a kiss on Miss Bar
bieri' cheek. Thus she laid to
rest the legend of the temper
amental, two-fisted Callas who
had a sharp elbow when it came
to sharing acclaim with a sister
singer.
The reputation of Mme. Callas,
the daughter of Greek immi

and at the Chicago Opera last
year was responsible for the
biggest demand for 3,612 open

Morse Favors UN

San Francisco (U.R) Sen.
Wayne Morse (D-Ore.), a mem
ber of the Senate foreign Re
lations committee, believes the
United Nations should investi
gate the Hungarian revolt.'
Morse said Monday the Unit
ed Nations should send a team
to Hungary to determine
whether Russia violated that
country's rights of self-determination.
He suggests the United
States should propose sending
such a team in the General As
sembly. Such a proposal, he said,
would do much to keep Russia
on the defensive "in the 100 year
cold war."
Morse also criticized the Re
publican administration for try
ing "in every crisis to go around
the United Nations, instead of
through it." Morse is a candi
date for reelection.
"The last thing Russia wants
now is a hot war." he said, "but
we must do everything possible
to keep Russia on the defensive
and off-balance."

Survey Shows
2nd Highest
(Editorial Note: This is thi
first in a series of articles on
fluoridation, being published
in cooperation with the Amer
ican Dental association and
the Jackson County Dental as
sociation. Residents of Med
ford will vote next Tuesday
on fluoridation of city water.)
The average 16-year-old child
in Jackson county has 14.5 teeth
which are decayed, missing or
filled, according to a survey
taken here in January, 1955, by
Dr. D. M. Hadjimarkos of the
University of Oregon dental
school.
A recent state - wide survey
showed that Jackson county has
the second-highest rate of tooth
decay of any county in the state.
The decay rate here is only .1
per cent less than in Clatsop
county the county in which the
highest decay rate was noted.
Springfield, Ore., with an esti
mated population of 10,807, has
the highest rate of decay of any
town in the whole United States.
Survey Taken
In Portland, a survey among
13-year-old children indicated 3
per cent were free of tooth de
cay; 17 per cent had complete
dental care; 30 per cent had
never been to dentists; and 50
per cent had been to dentists
but were still in need of dental
work.
The high rate of tooth decay
among Medford children indi
cates a great need for a fluori
dated water supply, according to
Dr. J. P. Dickson, Medford den
tist. "In fact," he said, "If all
persons needing dental care were
to seek it, dentists could care for
only one-fifth of the needs. Also,
if decay were to stop at this mo
ment, it would take the present
manpower of dentists 30 years
to completely catch up."
Dental Expense
The average yearly dental ex
pense for each child in Medford
under 15 years of age is S58.96,
according to a recent survey of
five Medford dentists by the
Jackson County Public Health
association. This can be con
trasted with the estimated flu
oridation cost of 47 cents a year
for each person in Medford.
Several leading dental experts
began experimenting with fluor
idation in 1945 in two commun
ities of New York.
In Newburgh, N.Y., an ounce
of fluoride was added to every
3,125 gallons of drinking water.
In Kingston, N. Y., no fluoride
was added. Before the experi
ment, thousands of children in
each community were given in
addition to dental examinations,
searching examinations of blood,
bones, tissues and organs to pro
vide a base line.
Decay Reduction
Ten years later, the children
in Newburgh were found to have
an overall reduction in tooth-
decay of 58 per cent as com
pared with children in Kings
ton. There was no evidence
that fluoridation had any effect
on internal organs, kidneys, ar
teries, bones, thyroid, hearing
or acne.
The experiments have since
spread over the nation. Through
the studies, the experts have de
termined fluoridation can pro
tect an individual against tooth
decay for his entire lifetime.
Though it will not treat de
cay that has already started, it
will affect the enamel of the
teeth, making them resistant to
decay. Children who drink fluoride-bearing
water from birth
will receive the greatest benefit.

County Has
Tooth Decay
This is because the enamel of
most of their teeth forms during
the first eight years of life. Older
children will receive some pro
tection against tooth decay, but
in lesser proportion than younger
ones.
Adjustment Necessary
The recommended formula is
one part fluoride to 1,000,000
parts of water. This Is equivalent
to 1 250th of a drop in a ordin
ary drinking glass of water. Flu
oridation simply means "replace
ment or a natural decay-preventing
substance found in some
community water supplies but
missing in others.
Since water in Medford has too
little fluoride content to prevent
tooth decay, the water supply
would have to be adjusted to the
point where children can have
maximum protection.

Demos Scientific
At Double Talk,
Dewey Declares
Johnson City, Tenn. (U.R)
Thomas E. Dewey told some
5,500 Republicans Monday night
the Democratic party has "made
a science of the slick art of
double talk."
The two-time presidential can
didate and former governor of
New York told an East Tennes
see GOP rally that Stevenson "is
talking badly on both sides of
every issue."
Stevenson "at least made sense
four years ago," he said.
Proposals Criticized
Dewey criticized the Demo
cratic candidates' proposals to
end H-bomb tests and the draft.
He said Stevenson "does not ex-I
plain what would prevent the j
whole world from falling to the
Reds if we had neither trained I
military manpower nor the best I
nuclear weapons, and he never j
can explain it."
"Both America and Russia ;
have the hydrogen bomb but
our country is way ahead. Our
survival depends on our grow
ing mastery of its new techni
ques," Dewey told the enthus-,
iastic crowd.
"It is important that we de
feat the candidate making these
proposals by the biggest vote in
history," he declared. "It it
equally important that we give :
the President a Congress that
wants to work with him and not j
against him."
