has been a
marked de
cline, last year
about 16,000
persons died
from it. In
most cases
these persons
could have

been cured if they had only
suspected or recognized their
trouble in an early stage, and
had then gone quickly to a
physician and perhaps to a san
atorium. Dr. Perkins estimates that to
day there are more than 1,200,
000 tuberculous persons in the
United States. Some 800,000 have
their disease in an active state,
and probably 250,000 are not
getting any treatment or supervi
sion. What is sad is that any
tuberculous person who is liv
ing with people, and especially
children, and is not very care
ful about spitting and coughing,
is going to give the disease to a
number of persons.. If every
person who has tuberculosis
would only be extremely care
ful about the disporsl of his
sputum, the disease could die
out in a few years.
I just came from Birming
ham, Alabama, where I was the
guest of the large and enthusiast
ic group of lay men and women
who have been participating in
the fight against tuberculosis.
The people at the luncheon, at
which I was one of the speakers,
filled several of the ballrooms
of a big hotel. It was most en
couraging to see so many in
telligent women working hard
to help in this campaign. We
doctors, working alone, cannot
win it. Many of the fine women
of Birmingham received awards
because of their outstanding
work m selling Christmas Seals.

The other day I was talking to
a woman who has to do with one
of the big trucks in which per
sons can get an x-ray film made
of their lungs, free. She said that
the sad thing is that so many of
the persons who suspect they
have tuberculosis are so afraid
of knowing the worst that they
won't go near the truck. They
don't want to know the truth.
They would prefer to stay home
and infect their children so that
later these children will suffer
terribly and perhaps die.

pointed Oregon state representa
tive of the National Foundation
for Infantile Paralysis, Basil O'
Connor, president of the March
of Dimes organization, an
nounced today.
Major, who joined the Na
tional Foundation about a year
ago- and worked in California
and Utah, will replace Gene
Malecki, who has resigned.
In his new post Major will
work with the volunteer mem
bers of the 36 chapters of the
National Foundation in Oregon,
assisting polio patients who need
March of Dimes aid. He will also
help in public education about
the Salk vaccine and will assist
volunteers in conducting the
annual March of Dimes next
January.
