Clay Pot Proves To Be
Valuable Indian Relic
I raised a hand to flick half
heartedly at a vine hanging
from a large pot above me. I
J'ad never taken a good look at
the pot before.
Crude as it was it had beauty
In a way. The pot, hung in
chains, was about 16 inches
deep. T.ie mouth was wide,
(Ome nine inches in diameter.
The neck was rather narrower.
and the belly, though it swelled
to a good 10 inches on the inside
diameter, tapered gracefully
downward so that the bottom of
the pot formed almost a point.
It was a perfect flower con
tainer to hang in chain. -1
thought, and yet it didn't seem
possible it could have been made
for that. There was a look of age
ibout it, of centuries even. Its
shape, on the other hand, meant
it couldn't have been designed
for the usual use of pots to
stand up anywhere as a receptacle.

name and address of the owner,
plus some other data, and agreed

eccasion, seeing the Columbian
exposition, and she must have
collected pictures of everything
exhibited. She was in a lot of
them, but those she wasn't in
were amost as important to her.
She remembered the incidents
vividly. -
"Too bad you couldn't have
mailed home postcards and so
forth, instead of just carrying
them. Some of the exposition
tamps are worth a lot."
. "Oh, but we did," she said.

pot is a vessel made from clay
by Indian potters of a few Ren
orations to a thousand years' ago.
They were fire baked to give
them strength and were then
used by the squaws to carry or
contain food.
"I found this one myself,'
said Ned, "and from a radiation

by. it's a good 1,000 years old.1

Such scarcity is by no means
unique, but it is expensive to
the collector. And in the case of
the 1838 New Orleans half dol
lar, some catalogue prices are
listed as high as S2.750, provid
ed the coin is in excellent con
dition.

The client laughed and was
there within, the hour. When he

I had hoped merely to divert
her attention, but the sight of

half hour of listening and being
shown the stamps had so far
been relatively worthless I was
about to make a break, for it,
when I noted a 3-cent, stamped
envelope with a somewhat odd
eclor on the stamp. The differ
ence was distinctly noticeable
in contrast with another of the
same denomination.
The color of the commemora
tive, round stamp, with the
heads of Columbus and Liberty,
is supposed to be chocolate on
white. But the color of the one
I had noticed was a slate brown
instead of chocolate. p
Seizing the envelope I insisted
I be excused long enough to
check it with the Scott's Cata
logue. My relative assented.
W hen I returned with the news
that her slate-colored item was
so rare it wasn't even listed in
cancelled condition but had an
uncancelled valuation of S55,
she was delighted.
