Back Stairs: Mishaps on Campaign Trip

Washington 'U.R) Back stairs
at the White House:
President Eisenhower's five
day campaign swing last week
was sprinkled with mishaps
ranging from hotel thefts to frac
tured bones among the press
corps. Mr. Eisenhower had a
blood shot left eye for two days
after two tiny pieces of confetti
got under the lid in Portland,
Ore., and caused a slight hemor
rhage. And on the amusing side his
alarm wrist watch went off with
a buzz near the end of his Port
land speech.
A sneak thief picked as one of
his victims a White House Secret
Service agent of all people.
Agent Floyd Boring's wallet
with $385 was stolen from his
Tacoma, Wash., hotel room while
he was taking a shower.
A wrist watch and $48 also
was stolen from the room of
Army Sgt. Philip Tarbell Jr.,
who is attached to the White
House staff, in the same hotel.
White House newsmen chipped
in and .made up the losses to
both, however.
James Lyons, pool newsreel
cameraman, suffered a fractured
knee when he fell down a flight
of stairs on the balcony of Seat
tle's Civic auditorium. His injury
forced him to stay behind.

truck carrying the White House
mimeograph machine from the
airport to the hotel collided with
another truck.
Mrs. Mamie Eisenhower
proved to have nearly as much
crowd appeal as her husband.

in the presidential parade be

Missing in Spain
Madrid (U.R) A U.S. Air
Force plane with five men
aboard was listed as missing to
day on flight between Madrid
and Barcelona.
Air Force headquarters here
said the craft, an L40 liaison
plane, left nearby Getafe Air
Base at 4:30 p.m. Monday with
four hours fuel.
Authorities here launched a
fullscale search for the small
plane which is presumed down
in the rugged terrain of north
eastern Spain.
U.S. Air Force planes from
North Africa and Germany
were flown to Spain to aid in
the search and the Air Force
said Spanish air force planes
were standing by.

Mr. Eisenhower unwittingly
caused a score of University of
Washington coeds to skip classes.
The girls went from Seattle to
Tacoma to get a close view of
the President. They stood in the
rain at the entrance to the
grounds of the home of the Pres
ifient's brother, Edgar H. Eisen
hower, where Mr. and Mrs. Eis
enhower had spent the night.
The girls brought with them a
huge sign: "U of W Gamma Phi's
Like Ike."
Edgar's men neighbors vied
with each other in contributing
food for the President's break
fast there. One furnished a spe
cial cornmeal. Another, who
raises chickens for a hobby, gave
the giblets for the gravy to go
on the fried cornmeal mush, a
favorite dish of the President.
He also fried some chicken for
the breakfast.

What happens to three young
children when their parents fail
to meet the responsibilities of
marriage and the family home,
become divorced, and place
them for adoption?
The mother wanted the chil
dren to have a secure home that
she felt she was unable to pro
vide. The father was unable to
support two families and agreed
with the mother that the chil
dren should not suffer because
of the parents' inability to ad
just. Two Prohlems
The family first had to find
the most workable solution to
serve the interests of both the
children and parents, and sec
ondly, everyone concerned had
to adjust to the workable solu
tion. The parents turned to the Boys
and Girls Aid Society of Ore
gon for assistance. The society
receives part of its support from
the United Medford Crusade.
After many hours of counsel
ing with the society's staff, the
parents decided the best solu
tion would be to relinquish the
children for adoption.
The society placed the children
in a carefully-selected foster
home and assumed responsibil
ity for all their needs. Later the
society found a set of adoptive
parents for them.
The needs of the youngsters,
when multiplied by thousands
of others, require thousands of
dollars which must be carefully
budgeted to do the most good.
United Medford Crusade
board members spend hundreds
of hours each year in budget
committee meetings where the
aRency needs are examined.
The Uniled Medford Crusade
helps support 25 agencies which
work under carefully planned
budgets. The Boys and Girls Aid
Society of Oregon is a typical
example of such an agency..
The hoard of directors of the
agenry meets monthly to de
cide where the emphasis should
he plnred on existing services.
Included In these discussions
are the Increasing demands for
foster home care, maternity care,
professional counseling and oth
er services.
First Step
That was the first step in set
ting up your United Medford
Crusade goal. The budget of the
agency first is studied before
being filed with the UMC offi
cials. The success of last year's UMC
campaign meant a secure home
and loving parents for the three
children. Their natural parents
felt they had taken the right
step in relinquishing them so
they would have normal, happy
lives.
Russian Observers
Studying Campaign
Washington (U.R) Three
Russian observers set out today
to get a first-hand, bipartisan
glimpse of American politics in
action.
The Russians came to the
United States at the invitation
of the State Department to ob
serve the windup of the national
campaign and the Nov. 6 elec
tion. They arrived Monday.
Today's schedule called for
visits to the Republican and
Democratic national committee
headquarters, to local headquar
ters of "Citizens for Eisenhower"
and "Volunteers for Stevenson"
and to the Capitol.
Tonight they start a cross
country tour that will take them
to Louisville, Ky., Los Angeles
and Iew York City.
Woman Gives Jungle
Specimens To Zoo
Washington (U.R) A Pitts
burgh housewife who likes to
bring 'em back alive has pre
sented the National Zoo with 26
golden dendrobates auratus and
a blue toucan.
The 33-year-old housewife,
Mrs. W. G. H. Latham, caught
the dendrobates and the toucan
during a recent hunting expedi
tion to the Colombian jungles.
She passed them on to the Na
tional Zoo Monday.
For those who don't know:
A dendrobate is a little orange
frog that secretes fatal poison.
A toucan is a bird about the
size of a small chicken with a
big hooked beak.
