ON ADOPTING A
GRANDPARENT
Senator Thomas C. Desmond,
of New York, who has done so
much to bring kindliness and
good sense
into the hand
ling of the
aged, has just
written a de
lightful arti
cle entitled,
"Adopted
Grandpa r
ents." As he
says, in thou-
" sands of homes
there are aged persons, living
alone and aching to hear the
laughter of children. In other
thousands of homes there are
children who miss the love of
an affectionate grandparent. I
like the idea of children adopt
ing a grandparent, if only be
cause many times in my life a
lonely orphan child has said to
me, "My Daddy's gone, so I'm
going to adopt you." In these
cases, for years afterward the
child and I kept up a corres
pondence, and we always re
membered each other on birth
days and Christmas.
Senator Desmond tells of a
boy named Johnny Watson, a
tow-haired child of five, who
moved with his parents from
New York to St. Louis. He had
always been so devoted to his
grandmother that when he had
to move away, he missed her
sadly. Soon he went exploring
around the block, hunting for a
grandmother, and within two
weeks he had turned up not
only one, but five! His mother
says now that Johnny has had
wonderful fun with these new
found grandmas.
Troops of Girl Scouts in Flush
ing, N. Y., have now adopted
277 grandparents. They adopted
an entire ward of old folks at a
big Home for the aged. These
children often visit their adopted
grandparents, and bring them
little gifts. They sing for them
and play games with them. To
day, 8,000 children in New York
City have a grandparent. It is a
wonderful thing for the old peo
ple, many of them forgotten by
their own family, to have the
children come in, so merry,
eager, friendly and affectionate.
In one city, Brownie Scouts
have adopted a group of grand-

Wool Show Awards
Three boys and two girls from
Jackson county won awards at
the annual 4-H wool show Satur
day, at the opening of the Pacific
International Livestock exposi
tion in Portland.
In the corriedale division,
Charles Elmore Jr., Applegate,
won second and sixth places, and
Miriam Gapen, also of Apple
gate, won fourth and fifth plac
es. In the cross bred division, Ur
sula Bates, Medford, won first
and second places, and James
Moore, Eagle Point, won fifth
place.
Earl Bowen, Gold Hill, won
fourth place in the southdown
division.

old people needs help, a big B
is put up in the window, and
soon a child comes running to
see what is needed. Perhaps it's
a letter that needs mailing, or a
library book that needs to be
returned, or a loaf of bread that
needs to be bought at the corner
store. These little tasks give the
children a sense of adventure
and service.
As Margaret Mead, the great
anthropologist, said a while ago,
American culture is oriented
around a two-generation family,
and now there is need for a
three-generation family with a
grandparent sitting in, an hon
ored place.
Family Deluged
Recently, Larry Fordham, of
Seattle, a 10-year-old boy, wrote
to the editor of the Seattle Post
Intelligencer, "My mother and
dad are orphans, and so I want
to adopt a grandmother and
grandfather." Soon the family
were deluged with applicants.
Larry and his brothers and
sisters interviewed the prospec
tive grandparents as carefully
as would a personnel manager
recruiting a new department
head. They asked them such
questions as, "How do you feel
about dogs, or, Do you ap
prove of a bird in the house?"
Soon the children had picked
not just two grandparents, but
four.
As Senator Desmond says, for
both the children and the old
folks, the "Adopt-a-Grandparent
idea" offers a road to happiness.
