MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THREE
On The Side

The Hague Our Horsei and '
Women department is constantly
in receipt of complaints that too
much space is devoted to women
and too little to horses. Not wish
ing this European report to be
subject to such a complaint I at
tended the races at the Duindigt
track in the suburbs of The
Hague. This is a beautiful mile
and one half course on which
both running and harness races
are staged. The harness horses
race on a special dirt track, the
runners on a turf track. The day
I attended there were six har- ,
ness races and one running race. ,
Details
The admission to Duindigt is !
about 78 cents for men and half '
that for women, lliere are no
other charges. The course is very j
large and well kept but the
stands are small. The pari-mu-
tuel system of wagering pre- i
vails. Tickets are sold off a rack. I
Some of the mutuel clerks are
women. The wagering unit is a
little more than a guilder, about
30 cents. Betting only for
straight and place. A special
type of betting is called "The I
Koppel." That's too complicated
to explain. I decided to become
a two and one half guilder bet-'
tor.
Breeding !
The harness horses were most
ly of American ancestry- Such 1
names as Hanover, Volo and
Spencer were prominent in the
breeding. The runners had good
breeding lines, mostly British.
There; was no starting gate used.
Was no race caller. Races were
run in silence. The fans did no
cheering. Not even at the fin
ish. At the end of the race the
winner was applauded with
hand clapping.
Handicapping
For the first race, a harness
vent, I was handicapped with I
the difficulty of understanding
the money and the manner of ;
placing the bet. So I lost. Then
I bought a Dutch racing paper
and was soon studying the start-
erg intelligently. I speak only
English but I can read a racing
form in any language. After that
I practically swept the card. Had
four winners in the five remain-
lng races we stayed for. I got 1
back all the money I lost betting !
on those wooden horses on the
ship.
Art
What had you accomplished
by the time you reached the age
of 26? About all I could point to
with pride was that in my last
year at college I batted fourth
on the ball team and had a bat
ting average of .382. When Rem
brandt was 26 he painted that
masterpiece known as "The Ana
tomy Lesson." The complete ti-1
tie of this painting is "The Ana- I
tomy Lesson of Professor Nice-
las Pieterszzon Tulp." It was !
painted by request of the Am-!
sterdam Medical association.
Many consider it Rembrandt's
best work. In any event it is.the
painting that first made him fa
mous, i
Dodgers
Brooklyn once had more trol
ley cars than any other city in
the world. The natives were
nicknamed "Trolley Dodgers."
That's how the Brooklyn ball
club was nicknamed the "Dodg
ers." I was brought up in. Brook
lyn. Have always considered my
self an accomplished traffic
dodger. However, this Holland
traffic baffles me. It is a quad
ruple threat: automobiles, bicy
cles, buses and trolley cars. All
constantly moving at top speed.
The cyclists arc the worst men
ace. Their favorite sport seems
to be making pedestrians jump.
They are certainly having a lot
of fun with me.
Namesake
Brooklyn, New York and the
13 other Brooklyn! in the U.S.A.
are named after Breukelen in i
Holland. This town is only 20 '
miles from Amsterdam. I will i
visit it and report my findings
for the benefit of our many sub- .
scribers who areTesidents of the i
beautiful borough across the I
bridge. I

NO MORE SHOOTING
Boston IU.P1 Any Rhode
Islander crossing the state line
into Massachusetts could have
been shot on sight until a few
months ago. One of the "blue
laws," recently repealed by the
state legislature, set down the
ruling during the colonial period.
