Village Outlaws
Banner Proclaiming
Hometown of Adlai
Libertyville. III. U.R A
village council has decided to
coutlaw a banner proclaiming
Libertyville the home town of
Adlai E. Stevenson.
Village President Francis J
Berry said he planned to write
a "neighborly" letter to the
Demorcatic presidental candid
ate, explaining that the sign was
removed because it was illegal.
The fact that the majority of
Libertyville voters usually mark
their ballots on the Republican
side has nothing to do with the
banner. Berry insisted.
Local merchants were aware
of the many tourist dollars that
were not filling their cash reg
isters simply because traveling
voters-were apparently ignorant
of the town's connection with
the candidate. Consequenty, a
large banner was unfurled across
the main street of Libertyville.
Large letters welcomed the vis
itor to:
"Libertyville The Home of
Adlai."
No sooner was the banner
raised than Berry ordered it
lowered. He cited a law pro
hibiting street banners here be
cause they constitute a safety
hazard.
The businessmen, however,
were not too pleased with the
rebuke to their enthusiasm and
local pride. They argued that
Democratic dollars were just as
valuable as Republican dollars.
Berry temporarily appeased
them by calling on the Village
Council for support.
The council voted, 4-2, to haul

Duff Faces Toughest Fight of
Political Life in Pennsylvania
Edttnr's note: This is another of the
top election contest across the nation.
By LLOYD ROCHELLE
United Press Correspondent
Harrisburg, Pa. (U.R)' U.S.
Sen. James H. Duff is a veteran
of many rough and tumble poli
tical campaigns in Pennsylvania,
but he has the toughest fight of
his career this year in his bid
for a secoii term.
The 72 -';;). old former gover
nor has oft; n -,-,id he never back
ed away f. - n fight. He has a
formidable o-.'Onent in Joseph
Sill Clark Jr., former mayor of
down the offending sign. This
decision was made in the face
of a pro-banner petition signed
by 172 townspeople.
Berry said that he would write
Stevenson "strictly on a person
al basis" to explain that there
was nothing personal in the
council's decision.
Philadelphia, the state's largest
city.
Each candidate professes con
fidence, but political dopesters
figure the outcome is a toss-up
at this stage. And with 47 Re
publicans and 49 Democrats now
in the Senate, this is another of
the contests on which control of
the upper house may hinge.
Duff has the personal backing
of President Eisenhower, with
all the weight that may carry
with the voters. He is the Presi
dent's senator since the Eisen
hower farm home is on the edge
of historic Gettysburg battlefield
in Central Pensylvania. Duff is
recognized as one of the first to
urge Mr. Eisenhower to run four
years ago.
He said recently that he did
not want to run again and only
did so at the request of the White
House.

ord in Philadelphia made him a
shrewd choice to run against
Duff. The Democratic organiza
tion, headed by young Gov.
George Leader and Pittsburgh
Mayor David Lawrence, has
thrown all its resources into the
battle. It has had good success
in its fund drive and registration
campaign.
The traditional Republican
majority on the voting lists has
been pared down from about one
million in 1952 to some 400,000
in last spring's primary.
Duff packs a big impact as a
personality. He stands close to
six feet and weighs about 200
pounds. His close-cropped hair is
dappled with gray. He is a fine
orator.
'Big Jim," as he is known in
Pennsylvania politics, has been
a consistent supporter of the
Eisenhower program in the Sen
ate.
tiarK, wno looks younger
than his 55 years, could be tak
en for a vigorous advertising ex
ecutive or businessman . He is
quick of movement and com
pletely at home in the street cor
ner rallies. That was a technique
he used when the Democrats
cracked the long Republican
hold on Philadelphia's city hall
a few years back.
He is a magna cum laude grad
uate of Harvard, practiced- law
from 1926 to 1952 except for five
years in the Army Air Force in
the China-Burma theater during
World War II.
Clark has hit Duffs voting
record and "absenteeism" in the
Senate. He contends Duff has
been absent from 37 per cent of
Senate roll calls in his first five
years there a charge emphati
cally denied by Duff. He also
charges Duff has done nothing
to help Pennsylvania's small
businessman, farmers and con
sumers.
On the GOP side, Duff is mak
ing much of the S50 a plate din
ner in Harrisburg Sept. 13 which
opened Adlai Stevenson's cam
paign. Duff has turned over to
the Justice Department docu
ments which he says prove state
employees were forced to contri
bute to the dinner under threat
of losing their jobs.
The Democrats reply that any
job changes made have been nor
mal turnovers in personnel.

As soon as rainy weather
starts there will be a fungus dis
ease attacking quite a group of
plants related to the Arborvitaes.
The Berckman's Arborvitae is
most severely affected but many
of the other small ornamental
arborvitae and Cyprus plants are
affected.
When the disease becomes es
tablished it kills off little twigs.
This generally occurs only in
one area or on one side of the
plant. This area then appears
quite dead and brown.
The disease is quite easy to
tontrol if a neutral copper spray
is applied thoroughly and at the
right time. As the spray must
prevent infection it needs to be
applied in the near future. One
fourth pound of neutral copper
in 3 gallons of water or 5 pounds
per 100 gallons sprayed onto the
plants until they are thorough
ly soaked will prevent infection.
The addition of a little detergent
would assist in getting good cov
erage and thereby improve control.
Some plants will already have
brown dead areas from last
year's infection. These areas can
be cleaned up by beating with a
rake or by brushing vigorously
with a gloved hand. This proce
dure would not only improve the
appearance of the plant but it
would also reduce the source of
infection and make control by
spraying somewhat easier.
Where plants have been severely
infected a second spray should

The Hague This is one of
the most beautiful cities I have
ever visited and also one of
the friendliest. English is widely
spoken. If you ask for directions
the person queried is very likely
to accompany you to where you
want to go and point out places
of interest on the way. It is
an extremely cosmpolitan .city
having long been the locale of
the foreign embassies. Also, as
you know, the locale of the
"peace palace." The American
embassy is a few doors from the
hotel Des Indies where we are
staying. The Des Indies is one
of the finest hotels in Europe
and . recently celebrated its 75
anniversary. It is the rendezvous
of the members of the diplomatic
'corps.
Pleas Not
The population of The Hague
is over half a million. To be
exact 555,339. It is the third
largest city in The Netherlands,
the first being Amsterdam and
the second Rotterdam. There is
an acute housing shortage in
The Hague. This is largely due
to the damage the city suffered
from during World War II when
it was occupied by the Germans.
It was from Scheveningen, A
suburb of The Hague that the
Germans launched their VI and
V2 missiles on England. Retalia
tion by Allied planes caused
much destruction in The Hague,
Houting
Young married couples have
great difficulty in getting a
house in The Hague. For child
less couples there is no chance
to get into a new housing de
velopment. Those with one child
have an outside chance. Two
child couples have a fair chance.
Those with three children top
the list. So as soon as a pair
of young people marry they start
to try for three children. One
couple had triplets and got a
house immediately. In addition
to acquiring a house having
children in The Hague has
another advantage. It brings
about a marked decrease in the
income tax. Furthermore, there
is a government bonus for each.
So now you know why The
Netherlands currently has the
highest birth rate in Europe.
Lunchon
Had a delightful lunch at a
place called Krul's in down
town section of The Hague. It
was a rarity in two respects.
There was no service charge.
And it was served by a beau
tiful waitress. As I told you
smart looking females are rare
in The Hague. However, I also
promised our bachelor subscrib
ers, who may contemplate visit
ing Holland that I would try
to locate some pulchritudinous
females. I am off to a good start.
This tray queen, a beautiful
brunette, speaks perfect English,
has a million dollar smile and
beautiful brown eyes. I had a
delicious lunch consisting of
tomatensoep, broodje met ham,
apppelbol and koffee met gebak.
Cost me 60 cents.

class. Price of popular brands
is 25 cents a package . . . Scotch
whisky is much cheaper here
than in New York. About 52
cheaper per fifth for the best
known brands . . . The ice cream
is wonderful. An ice cream soda
costs about 20 cents . . . you
can get an excellent dinner in
the best restaurants in The
Hague for about S2. A meal that
would cost you five times as
much in New York restaurants
of similar class.
Taxicabi
The taxicabs in The Hague
are very elegant. Are like lim
ousines. Drivers are attired in
chauffeurs' uniforms. Rates are
about 20 cents for the first five
eighths of a mile and eight cents
for each additional five-eighths
of a mile. For 28 cents you can
ride a mile and a quarter. When
you get off the driver will open
the door for you. If you tip
him he thanks you profusely.
Grammar
Grammatically, The Nether
lands is handled as a plural. I
have been saying "The Nether
lands is." I should have said
"The Netherlands are." As for
example: "The Netherlands Ere
not very large, being approx
imately 12,883 square miles in
area." My grammatical error
will cost me plenty of stogies.
Particularly in Boston. Oh, well,
I will pay off in Dutch stogies.
They can be bought for about
three for a nickel.
