    Three Scholarships
Assured Festival
During '5? Season
Ashland Three acting schol
arship! for the 1957 Oregon
Shakespearean Festival have
been assured through efforts of
two Ashland civic groups, Wil
liam Patton, Festival general
manager, has announced.
The Soroptimist club recently
presented a check for S225 for a
scholarship. Members of the Ash
land chapters. Gamma Zeta and
Alpha Sigma of the Beta Sigma
Phi, have presented the Festival
association with a check for
$430. The amount will continue
two scholarships which Beta
Sigma Phi, has made available
in the past, Patton said.
Help Actors
Festival scholarships are de
signed to help with room and
board expenses of actors and
technicians. Patton pointed out
that without the scholarship pro
gram, actors and technicians re
ceive no financial help during
the three-month period they are
in the area working on the an
nual productions.
According to Patton the schol
arships are of major importance
to the Festival's continuation.
He urged organizations which
wish to contribute funds, to do
so.
Presently more than two-thirds
of the total expense of the schol
arship program must be paid
from limited box office receipts,
Patton said. This, he added,
drains funds which could other
wise be used to improve shows
and increase the promotion ap
peal of the event to prospective
tourists throughout the country.

Dismissal of Swing
For Misconduct Asked
Washington (U.P.) Rep. Rob
ert H. Mulhollan (D-W.Va.) has
called for dismissal of Gen.
Joseph M. Swing as U. S. immi
gration commissioner for "mis
conduct" in office.
Muilholan, chairman of a
House subcommittee that has in
vestigated Swing, made the re
quest Tuesday in a letter to Pres
ident Eisenhower.
The subcommittee severely
criticized Swing for hunting
trips he made to Mexico at gov
ernment expense and for what
it called his "lack of candor" in
testifying to the subcommittee.
Muilholan, in his letter to Mr.
Eisenhower, accused Attorney
General Herbert Brownell Jr.,
of "childish petulance" in refus
ing to give the subcommittee in
formation it had requested. He
said Brownell's conduct was "incredible."

Chevrolet Offers
Fuel Injection
System for 1957
Detroit (U.P.) Chevrolet, of
fering a fuel injection system
which boosts horsepower all the
way up to 283, introduced its
1957 models to the public to
day. The General Motors division
said the new cars have "the
greatest variety of power plants
ever produced by a low price
car builder." They start with a
six-cylinder engine generating
140 horsepower and range up to
the Corvette V-8 giving 270
horsepower.
Optional Equipment
Fuel injection, offered as op
tional equipment, boosts the
Corvette engine to 233 horse
power and eliminates the car
buretor. "Each of the engines is im
proved mechanically, but the
gain in power-up from a peak
of 225 horses in the 1956 line
is primarily due to larger bore,
higher compression ratios, high
er lift camshafts and fuel in
jection," the company said.
Making its debut as optional
equipment with the "ramjet"
injection is a new triple-turbine
automatic transmission called
"turboglide." Improved "power
glide." conventional transmis
sion and overdrive also are of
fered .
460 Combinations
A total of 460 model-color
combinations are available in
the Bel Air, Two-Ten, One-Fifty
Corvette sportscar series. The
wheelbase remains at 115 inch
es but the overall length of the
passenger cars has been increas
ed 2i inches.
Chevrolet also has modified
its suspension and shock ab
sorber systems and has joined
the swing to 14-inch wheels and
low pressure tires.

ammonia fumes, leaking from
a storage tank safety device,
shrouded a section of the city
early today.
No injuries were attributed
to the non-poisonous but annoy

Police sealed off a 30-block
area to traffic and advised resi
dents to shut windows and doors

men sought to shut off the flow.
The leak was discovered about
